Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 4/4/15
I come to you now at the turn of the tides. For the next two months, DC Comics is going to be doing a big Convergence crossover, taking their entire line of comics and doing a bunch of weird alternate reality things that I have simply not kept up with. I have no idea if I’m going to review any DC Comics for the next two months. I might check a few of them out individually, maybe haphazardly and randomly, but I just don’t know for sure.
(Although Greg Rucka’s Renee Montoya comic is an absolute must!)
So we’re going to spend this week saying goodbye to a few of DC’s regular releases. Not only do we (finally!) have the last issue of Batman Eternal, but Batman and Robin comes to an end with a rather amazing Annual issue. It won’t be back after Convergence. And Harley Quinn delivers a pretty fun cliffhanger in advance of the break.
Out of all of them, I’m going to have to give Comic Book of the Week to Batman and Robin Annual #3. You’re going to have to read this one to believe it!
Over at Word of the Nerd this week, I reviewed the prologue issue for the new Uncanny Inhumans series. Black Bolt is the star of Uncanny Inhumans #0, and the issue shows why he could easily carry a comic book all on his own.
I am also super pleased to announce the launching of www.GamerGirlandVixen.com, a new site for my own self-published comic! We bought the domain name and are gearing up for our Kickstarter coming next month! Visit the site and follow along with the production!
Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #17, Batman Eternal #52, Batman and Robin Annual #3, Doctor Who: The 9th Doctor #1, and Harley Quinn #16.
Somebody Thinks Rip Hunter is Better Than Booster Gold
In a case that can only be described as sheer madness, someone out there in TV land has decided that Rip Hunter is a better character than Booster Gold. It makes no sense. But they’ve gone and cast Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter in that upcoming Justice League-esque TV show. This comes soon on the heels of a casting announcement for Hawkgirl.
Rip Hunter is a generic time traveller who debuted in comics in 1959 and had a short-lived comic book series in the early 60s. He’s a handsome, somewhat dashing action hero type who basically just travels around time having adventures. Darvill, of course, was Rory Williams on Doctor Who, so he is no stranger to time travel.
Now, we knew a time traveller was coming to the show because of casting announcements. But like any sane people, we all thought it was going to be Booster Gold, the far far more interesting comic book time traveller. Booster Gold is a washed up football player from the future who steals a time machine and some futuristic technology and comes back in time to be a modern day superhero, using the future tech to make it look like he has super powers. That is a damn good character premise, and Booster Gold has an awesome gold costume.
Rip Hunter is just a dude who maybe wears a jumpsuit from time to time. In no epoch is Rip Hunter a better, more interesting character than Booster Gold. Yet this is the epoch we live in, apparently.

Doctor Who LEGOs are Happening!
I asked for it years ago, but now LEGO is making it official: Doctor Who LEGOs!
Just like the Ghostbusters last year, this new set comes via the LEGO Ideas crowd-produced program. Basically, LEGO lets fans design and submit their own LEGO models, and then everybody votes for the ones they want. Any idea that reaches 10,000 votes then goes before the LEGO review board and they pick the ones they want to make
And Doctor Who has made the cut!
No details have yet been released, but this is still pretty awesome news!
Though I still haven’t bought that Ghostbusters Ecot-1 set yet…

6 Other Potential TV Crossovers
In a television event that is almost as historic as the final episode of M*A*S*H, The Simpsons crossed over with Family Guy this past weekend, creating a relatively mild episode for both shows. I liked it, in the same way I generally like any new episode of The Simpsons or Family Guy. I will always be a fan of both shows, but I think we’ve all settled into a general state of mediocre acceptance. Still, whoever though it would happen, right?
Although actually, I’m kind of wondering why it doesn’t happen more often! Crossovers are the bee’s knees, I tell ya! Why aren’t there more of them? Like Freddy vs. Jason, Aliens vs. Predator, that time The Critic guest-starred on The Simpsons, or when the Ninja Turtles met the Power Rangers; it’s all gold! If it was up to me, we’d have even more of them. I know there are different networks and contracts and executives in the way, but I’m the sort of man who daydreams of a perfect utopia of entertainment.
So join me after the jump to see my six ideas for the most epic TV crossovers imaginable!
Doctor Who? Peter Capaldi, That’s Who!
Like the rest of geekdom, I watched the season premiere of Doctor Who Saturday night with bated breath, eager to see how new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, would do in the role. I wasn’t around either time when David Tennant and Matt Smith took over, I had to catch both of those regenerations in reruns online. So Saturday’s episode was my first real time experience with a new Doctor.
And it was great!
The episode itself – Deep Breath – was pretty good. Not one of the best of all time, but that’s fine. I think I liked it more than any episode in Season 7. I love the Pasternoster Gang – Vastra, Jenny and Strax – so seeing them with the new Doctor was really fun. I hope they stick around, because it’s a hoot seeing a new Doctor interact with his former self’s supporting cast (though now that I think about it, Capaldi didn’t spend much time at all with Vastra and friends). I also really liked Clara in this episode. I think Season 8 is going to try to build her up a bit more – before she leaves around Christmas, of course.
But the real draw of the new episode was Capaldi himself – and he absolutely nailed it! Oh man, that was an exciting performance. I knew to anticipate a lot with Capaldi, even if I haven’t seen any of his other shows, but he lived up to all the hype and hope. He was wickedly sharp in his performance, a touch more serious than Matt Smith. Once he gets his mind settled and emerges as the Doctor, Capaldi commands every scene he’s in. Whether he’s alarmed at his eyebrows or bantering with Clara, Capaldi fits perfectly as both the Doctor and his version of the Doctor.
In fact, I loved the banter the most. Whether they’re talking about the Sonic Screwdriver’s voice commands, or bickering about who is the bigger egomaniac in a booth at a family restaurant, Capaldi and Jenna Coleman worked great together.
I’m now even more excited about the new season. The cameo at the end was nice, but I think I liked Capaldi’s response even more. He made a great first impression, and I’m confident he’s going to make a great Doctor.
