Tim Drake is Coming Back as Robin in Chip Zdarsky’s Batman!

This is going to be another one of those niche blog articles where I’m really just writing my thoughts on a very specific comic book thing that I am interested in. Like, a lot of people reported on the cool news that creator Chip Zdarsky will be taking over the main Batman comic for an extended run. I saw the news and was pretty pumped, because for strange reasons, I’ve never actually read an ongoing Zdarsky comic. He’s supposed to be really good!

I was already planning on reading and reviewing Zdarsky’s Batman when it starts up in a few months…but something caught my eye just the other night that has raised my excitement through the roof.

Zoom in to really see the magic

When I first saw this picture, from a distance when cruising through headlines, I just thought that yellow on Batman’s chest was a stylized symbol. But when I got a second, closer look, I confirmed that it’s actually Robin! I love Robin!

So I went to ComicBook.com, which interviewed Zdarsky about his new run, and I learned some truly amazing news: Zdarsky plans to bring Tim Drake back as Robin full-time in order to recapture that Dynamic Duo action in his upcoming Batman run.

So many different Robin costume designs these days; my list is obsolete

I don’t know if I can properly describe how excited I am by this news. This is everything I want from Batman comics; something I’ve wanted for more than a decade at this point, I think.

As we all know, Damian Wayne has been Robin for a very long time now. But Damian isn’t really a sidekick. He’s got a ton of his own things going on, including his own solo comic. Which is fine, but not something that I, personally, care about. I like the classic Dynamic Duo set up, where Robin is Batman’s sidekick and works with him on crimes and investigations, with Batman is a mentor role.

And we haven’t gotten this dynamic in a very long time. So I am very, very excited that Zdarsky is going to use Tim Drake, the best Robin, in the role that I love best.

Unfortunately, we have to wait all the way until July to see what happens. And the possibility remains that they’ll call him “Red Robin”, but let’s hope not.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 3/5/22

Good news and bad news, everybody! The good news is I’ll be going to see The Batman today and I’m expecting to have a good time! The bad news there might not be reviews next week, as I will be out of state attending my sister’s wedding! That’s good news for her! But we’ll see if I have any time before I leave to read and review some comics.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Static: Season One #6 for an awesome, heroic finale to this first storyline. Not sure why this comic needs seasons, but this season finale was cool as heck.

One opportunity…to seize everything you wanted…

Meanwhile, I beat Pokemon Legends: Arceus and now I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to splurge on Horizon Forbidden West yet, at least not until after I get back from my sister’s wedding next weekend. So maybe I’ll take up reading for the next week? We’ll see.

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #91, Batman #121, One-Star Squadron #4, She-Hulk #2, Static: Season One #6 and X-Men #9.

My 6 Favorite Batman Costumes

It’s new Batman movie week! The Batman debuts on Thursday, though a doctor’s appointment means I won’t be able to check it out until probably Saturday. But that’s a me problem, not a you problem. You get to see the movie whenever you want and read my Batman Week List of Six about favorite Bat-costumes!

Here’s lookin’ at you, kid

I did a similar List of Six a couple years ago for Spider-Man, when one of those new Spider-Man movies came out. So why not dig deep into the world of alternate Batman costumes and see what I like and don’t like? There aren’t as many alternate versions of Batman costumes as there are Spider-Man costumes. Batman tends to get very subtle changes to his outfit while maintaining the same look. Or sometimes he dresses like a zebra. Still, I’ve got some favorites out of those subtle changes, and some favorites out of really cool alternate looks.

Join me after the jump for my favorite Batman costumes over the years, and feel free to share some of your own in the comments!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 2/26/22

We’re one week away from The Batman movie and two weeks away from my sister’s wedding! I’m gonna have a pretty busy March. Thankfully, this week had some nice, enjoyable comics, including Spider-Man and Saga.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Strange Academy #16 for a truly heartbreaking story.

This can only end well

Meanwhile, I’m finally watching the third season of Doom Patrol and it’s pretty darn good. This series seems to have fallen off a lot of radars, but it’s still great! I’ve also entered the endgame of Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Hopefully I’ll be able to entertain myself catching all the Pokemon, to stave off that desire to spend $60 on Horizon Forbidden West.

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #90, Saga #56 and Strange Academy #16.

The Ninja Turtles Are Finally Going There

Fun story about me: I own all of the hardcover, omnibus collections of the IDW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book series…and I’ve never read them. I’ve followed this series from afar since its inception, and have only read a handful of actual issues. It’s a wonderful retelling of all corners of TMNT lore in one great package, and I’m excited to someday actually read the series to see if it lives up to the hype.

The comic definitely makes some great choices at least, such as bringing back Turtle ne’er-do-well Venus De Milo!

I don’t know the current storyline and I don’t know how she’s going to show up, but I’m thrilled that the IDW comic has the courage and energy to re-imagine Venus De Milo. She may have been an embarrassment all the way back in Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation, but I firmly believe there are no such things as bad characters, only bad writers.

Hence why I will always be waiting for Jar Jar Binks’ big break.

Anyway, Venus De Milo shows up in the TMNT comic with the upcoming issue #127. That’s probably two or three hardcover collections away, so it’ll be a few years before I actually get to read the story, but I thought it was a neat enough development to share.

You can read more about her arrival here.
