6 Classic Godzilla Monsters I Want to See in the Modern Films
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire comes out this week and promises some brand new monster action — and a pink Godzilla, which I’m totally fine with. We’ve already seen the new orangutan monster in the trailers, and there are hints of even more beasties for the new film. And while I’m in favor of creating new monsters, there are still plenty of classic beasts we’ve yet to see in the new franchise.
I’m an old-school Godzilla fan from the silly ’80s period. And my favorite films were the ones where Godzilla teams up with other good monsters to fight the bad guys. The new movies have featured a lot of classic monsters, from Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan to a surprise appearance from Mechagodzilla. But I want more! Hopefully this new film is another hit and we can keep getting these sequels over and over again, with more and more monsters!
Join me after the jump for six classic Godzilla beasties that I want to see in the new films!
6. Megalon
Megalon is a big ole bug monsters from a single movie all the way back in 1973. He was the main antagonist in Godzilla vs. Magalon. Dude looks nasty, as a big, rhinoceros beetle baddie. He deserves a chance to come back and be a menace, or perhaps a jobber to get taken down easily. Either way, I have somewhat fond memories of his straightforward movie and he deserves another shot.
5. King Caesar
I’m a sucker for Godzilla having allies, and King Caesar is a very unique one. Most monsters are bugs or reptiles, and King Caesar is an Okinawan guardian lion, very similar to Chinese guardian lions. He’s got a cool look and a heroic back story, and that makes him worthy of showing up again in the modern day.
4. Hedorah
Hedorah is the pollution monster that showed up to battle Godzilla in 1971 as an allegory for smog and pollution. That allegory is just as real today as it was back then, so Hedorah is due for a comeback. Why must Godzilla always fight giant bugs or lizards? Fight allegories!
3. Gigan
Gigan is probably the biggest bad guy yet to appear in the modern films. He’s an alien bio-weapon, complete with hooks for hands and a spinning saw blade in his chest. I think he also shoots lasers from his eye? Dude is a goofy looking monster, but he’s a beast on the battlefield, and I’m sure he could look really awesome in the modern day films. He’s had some modern appearances in some fan films, but I want the real Gigan in a real movie!
2. Jet Jaguar
No, I’m not kidding. Where is our modern day Jet Jaguar?! He’s a giant robot built by scientists to help fight monsters, and he’s an old tag team partner of Godzilla’s, having battled both Megalon and Gigan. We’ve already seen humanity build Mechagodzilla in the modern movie franchise, surely some good guys can build Jet Jaguar? Godzilla needs more friends than just King Kong.
1. Anguirus
Speaking of friends for Godzilla, Anguirus is his bestest buddy, and that has always pleased me. Anguirus is my favorite of the classic kaiju, and I’m very disappointed that he hasn’t appeared in the modern films. He’s the always trustworthy sidekick, who looks visually distinct and is always happy to help his pal Godzilla fight a bad monster. I would love a modern day Anguirus, but we are always denied!
