My 6 Most Anticipated Movies of 2023
The new year is here and that means we have a whole new year of movies to look forward to! I’m a big movie guy — and even do a movie review podcast for my day job, if that sort of thing interests you. And I’ve definitely got my list of most anticipated movies for the year. There’s a lot coming out, including a new Indiana Jones, a new Mission Impossible and a bunch of new Marvel movies, so which ones am I looking forward to most of all?
Look, I’m a simple man with simple tastes. Is this list mostly going to be made up of Marvel movies? Yes. Should you stop reading now? No! Maybe there will be some surprises! Heck, one of the movies on this list I only learned about by researching upcoming movies for this list! How’s that for anticipation? I find out it exists and I get so excited that it immediately goes on the list! This year should be a good year in movies. I know I’ve got my hopes up across the board!
Join me after the jump for my most anticipated movies this year. And feel free to share your own in the comments down below!
6. Asteroid City — June 16
This is the movie I only learned about while putting this list together! It’s the next Wes Anderson movie, and I had no idea it was coming out this year. I knew Anderson was working on a new film, because he usually is, but I didn’t know anything about the title, plot or release date. It’s going to be about a junior astronomer’s club or something. And it’s got a wonderful cast, including Tom Hanks making his Wes Anderson debut! How neat! I love me some Wes Anderson movies and I am now very excited for this one. Though as with most of his films, it probably won’t actually play in my local movie theater…
5. Barbie/Oppenheimer — July 21
I am looking forward to both of these movies, and I’m especially looking forward to the hilarity of them both coming out in the same weekend. Barbie looks really good. Director Greta Gerwig is going to do some cool, next level exploration of the Barbie doll? Sign me up! And Christopher Nolan is doing something of a biopic about the father of the atomic bomb. And they’re both coming out the same weekend! That should be a hoot of a double feature.
4. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania — Feb. 17
The next Marvel Studios flick is right around the corner, barely more than a month away. Ant-Man is probably my favorite movie Avenger, so I’m definitely looking forward to his next film. I’ve enjoyed the first two so far. And I know it’s going to be a big adventure down in the Quantum Realm, complete with the proper introduction of Kang the Conqueror. But am I the only one who is more interested in learning about Scott’s life post-Endgame? We saw glimpses of stardom in the trailer, with word of a book deal, and mention of his podcast in the Ms. Marvel show. He was a regular nobody who then rose up and was instrumental in reversing the Blip and fighting in that big Endgame battle! I want to see that explored as much as possible, the little guy becoming famous solely because of his work on the Avengers.
3. The Super Mario Bros. Movie — April 7
I think this looks really good. I love the scope of the world-building we’ve seen so far in the trailers. It seems epic, like they really put in the work to make a Super Mario World, you know? The Chris Pratt voice thing probably won’t be as bad as we’re all fearing. And instead, we’ll get this really cool, really colorful, very spirited Mario Bros. movie. Based on what we’ve seen in the trailers, I really think this one is gonna be neat as heck!
2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 — May 5
Oh man, this one is going to be good! Director James Gunn has only gotten better since he started down this journey. The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker were wonderful experiences! Same with the Guardians Holiday Special! So I am very, very, very pumped for him to bring the Guardians of the Galaxy full circle with this finale. It’s gonna be funny. It’s gonna be emotional. It’s gonna go places we don’t expect. This might be the movie of the year!
1. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse — June 2
Unless this other Marvel sequel is even better than we could possibly expect! Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was such a huge surprise of a masterpiece! So to know that the creative team is back to make the sequel, which is clearly gonna get weird with it, then I think it’s safety to say I couldn’t get much more excited than this! All sorts of alternate reality Spider-People, plus cameos from characters I love, like Scarlet Spider and The Spot? Across the Spider-Verse is gonna be so damn cool!
