6 Characters Who Need to Appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie Post-Credits Scene

The Super Mario Bros. Movie looks pretty dang cool. Chris Pratt’s voice acting aside, the size, scope and attention to detail we’ve seen in the trailers so far is pretty amazing. From King Koopa invading the icy penguin kingdom to Mario Karts riding eternal on the Rainbow Road, I am loving the approach they’re taking to this movie. They’re keeping things cartoony, while taking the lore very seriously. As the pop culture geek that I am, I like that approach.

So how far are they willing to take it?

Actual plumbing jobs?

It can be assumed that the filmmakers are hoping for a while franchise. That’s how movies work these days. And there is 40-some years of Mario Bros. mythology to draw from. We saw Yoshis, fire flowers, Donkey Kong and Mario Kart in the trailers so far, imagine what else might be hiding in the movie. Or, better yet, imagine who they’re saving for a post-credits scene? Will the movie have a post-credits scene? Obviously I have no idea. But imagine the possibilities! Imagine who they could draw from to throw into the film. Post-credits scenes are still hugely popular, and the sky is the limit for The Super Mario Bros. Movie!

Join me after the jump for six suggestions for that crucial, post-credits, sequel-teasing cameo.

6. Rosalina

Teal Peach

Rosalina is proving to be really popular these days, with a lot of people (my family included) hailing the Mario Galaxy games as the best Mario has ever been. The idea of different galaxies is teased in the latest trailer, so surely Rosalina and her cosmos-spanning empire is out there somewhere? Having her show up at the end of the movie could tease an intergalactic Mario adventure for the sequel. Sounds pretty reasonable.

5. John Leguizamo’s Luigi

Gone but not forgotten

You know what wouldn’t be reasonable? Enter the Marioverse! John Leguizamo is still a working and vocal actor (he was great in Violent Night this past weekend!). So how insane would it be if an older, live action Luigi showed up at the end of the movie to welcome the Mario Bros. into the larger Mario Multiverse? Those things are all the rage these days! This is still the year of Everything Everywhere All At Once and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This is still the year Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe ended with a Beavis and Butt-Head multiverse. And legacy sequels are still really hot. So what if the animated Mario Bros. sequel also serves as a sequel to the live action Super Mario Bros. from 1993? Minds blown.

4. Bowsette

The internet will be

Maybe they’ll get weirdly sexy with it. Bowsette, if you can remember, was a fan idea that really exploded in popularity a couple of years ago due to sheer sexiness. Bowsette is Bowser wearing that crown power-up that turns Toadette into Peachette. What started as a really funny web comic turned into a tidal wave of fan artists from around the world drawing stupid, sexy Bowsette. Imagine the insanity that would occur if Bowsette made her canon debut at the end of The Super Mario Bros. movie? Lots of post-credits scenes feature the villain somehow clawing back to life to menace our heroes again. Imagine if they do that with the defeated Bowser, and he grabs the Super Crown power-up and then Bowsette sashays across the screen. The world may never be the same.

3. Wart

Remember!

Or maybe they’ll go super traditional, albeit really obscure? Wart is the main villain from the Super Mario Bros. 2 video game, that weird middle child that we all played but also almost completely ignore. Wart doesn’t get invited to go-karting or golf. Wart didn’t get a special world in Mario Odyssey. But Wart could be a new antagonist in a future sequel. He’s established in the lore, and he would be a fun wink at the fans who know the deep mythology. But you know who would be better?

2. Wario

Voiced by…Keira Knightley

I’m a big Wario fan. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins was a staple of my childhood, back when I was only allowed to have a Game Boy. I played that thing a bajillion times. I played it so much I was coming up with weird ways to break the game. And Wario is just a fun villain. He’s Bizarro Mario, and that works on so many levels. That Wario then went on to get his own series of games just makes him a richer, more useful character. Plus, he’d be easy for general audiences to understand. We don’t need to wink at the fans to make a good sequel tease. Just introduce a snarling, snarky, evil version of Mario at the end. Fans will get it and love it, and those who have no idea will also easily understand. He’s the obvious choice.

Other than…

1. Sonic the Hedgehog

You don’t know the meaning of fast

We’re all thinking it. We all want it to happen. Sonic the Hedgehog has a very popular movie franchise right now, and he’s a fully CGI character. And he’s got magic rings that allow him to jump to different worlds. I’m sure the great minds of Hollywood could have Sonic take a ring to the Mushroom Kingdom. And then we could get some kind of Sonic vs. Mario on the big screen. It would be insane. It would blow every single mind of every single 80s kid like me who lived through the console wars. And then why not have Detective Pikachu show up as well? Why not build to an entire Smash Bros. universe? These things are within our power to make happen! The world can have nice things! The world can be amazing!

So let’s all start getting our hopes up now.
