My 6 Most Anticipated Movies of 2019
Happy 2019, everyone! Let’s hope it’s a good year! I’ve got a couple of fires on the burner. Expect some big Gamer Girl & Vixen news this month! And there’s a ton of new movies I’m really excited to see! Let’s talk about those.
Going to see movies has become a really involved hobby of mine. I like to do some short, quippy reviews on Facebook afterwards, and I’ve been writing full-on reviews for my newspaper day job for a few months now. I just love seeing movies! Even with MoviePass out of my life, I still like heading to the theater and taking in a flick. And these are the six movies I’m most excited to see going into the new year!
6. Detective Pikachu – May 10
Who would have thought this movie would be anything? When they first announced a Detective Pikachu movie, I assumed it was just going to be some kiddie cartoon affair, and I chuckled at all the means that wanted to have Danny DeVito do the voice. I thought that was the end of it. Nope! The movie then goes and releases one of the most insane trailers of last year, revealing that this will be a live action endeavor, creating a world where semi-realistic looking pokemon exist alongside humans! It’s madness! I’m a big pokemon fan, been playing since Pokemon Blue. So I’m legit fascinated to see how this movie unfolds, and I hope it’s not too dumb of a plotline. I wanna see me some freaky semi-realistic looking pokemon!
5. The Best of Enemies – April 5
I didn’t even know this movie existed until I saw a trailer for it the other day. Best of Enemies is about the true story of Civil Rights activist Ann Atwater and her contentious friendship with Ku Klux Klan leader C.P. Ellis in 1971 North Carolina. I’d read about this real life story back on Cracked, when that website was worth a damn, and it’s just the neat little story about a black woman using the powers of righteousness and friendship to help a Klansman see the error of his ways. And it’s got Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell in the main roles. This could be a really awesome indie flick!
4. Godzilla: King of the Monsters – May 31
I’m a sucker for Godzilla movies and I really enjoyed the first one a few years ago. Heck, I’m one of the few people who actually enjoyed the idea that they didn’t just flood the movie with Godzilla, that they used him sparingly, and I’m legit interested in Ford Brody as a character. I hope we find out what happened to him and his family. So getting a bigger sequel, with Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah, is right up my alley! Bring it on! Bring all of them on and lets see what kind of madness is in store!
3. Captain Marvel – March 8
Has anyone else noticed that the Captain Marvel trailers aren’t playing before other movies? I’ve been to dozens of movies since the first Captain Marvel trailer, and I honestly don’t think I’ve seen it before anything…not even Venom or Into the Spider-Verse. What’s up with that? Is it only my theater? Because I’m excited to see how this one turns out. It’s a Marvel Studios movie, so you know I’m 100% on board with anything they do. I like Captain Marvel as a character, Brie Larson looks fine for the role and I’m excited to get another Marvel superhero. This should be a good one.
You’ll notice that Spider-Man: Far From Home isn’t on this list, though it does come out next year. I’ll go see it and probably enjoy it, but I don’t really have any excitement towards it at the moment. Likewise for Shazam! We’ll see how that one turns out.
2. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part – February 8
The first LEGO Movie was the biggest mind-blow of a movie I’ve seen in a least a decade. I went in expecting a fun little romp, I came out having been personally touched by a masterpiece. So yeah, I’m excited to see what the sequel has to offer. The same creative people are behind it, all of the voice actors are back, and I’m going to get my hopes up. I’m a little worried that the sequel will skew in the wrong directions, but we’ll see. I’m very open-minded here. Maybe I’ll get lucky and they’ll find new ways to touch me. Or maybe it’ll just be a nicely enjoyable sequel. I’m up for both!
1. Avengers: Endgame – April 26
I make no bones about the fact that I’m a total Marvel Studios fanboy. I’m not ashamed of it. I don’t run from it. Their movies are awesome and I love them. Avengers: Infinity War was my favorite movie of 2018, and I am very much looking forward to Endgame to see how it all wraps up. I loved that first teaser trailer, and considering Ant-Man is my favorite hero in the MCU, I’m definitely on board to see him come in and be his usual Paul Rudd charm machine. I have absolute faith that this movie will be awesome and I can’t wait to see it happen. Avengers Assemble!
