My 6 Favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe Moments (So Far)

Avengers: Infinity War is upon us! The most anticipated film of the year debuts tomorrow night and I’ll be there for the first showing in town! I can’t wait! The hype is through the roof and beyond exciting. I’m one of those suckers who has loved every single Marvel movie so far, including Avengers: Age of Ultron and Thor: The Dark World.

MCU Favorites List 01

One more day!

To celebrate the post 10 years of Marvel Cinematic Universe awesomeness, I’ve thrown together a list of my favorite moments! Why not bask in some real cool bits and pieces before diving in to the next epic? And I’ve contained the list to just the movies, even though there are some great moments throughout the TV shows, too!

Join me after the jump for my favorite scenes, lines of dialogue and other great moments from the past 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

6. Star-Lord opens his mom’s present

Foreshadowing

I really dig the moment where Star-Lord opens his mom’s present at the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. It’s a really quiet, touching scene as he reads the letter and finally unwraps the paper, having matured enough in this adventure to feel worthy of opening the present at long last. Then he sticks it in the player and ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ starts playing, and Gamora starts bopping her head as they share a quiet moment, and then the song really bursts and we see everybody else celebrating the victory. Just a great ending to a great movie.

5. Vision kills Ultron

He was only born yesterday

I just love the gentle nature of this moment. I’m not particularly fond of the Vision in the movies, but I really enjoyed Ultron. I like their quiet conversation, two AIs talking about humanity, fully aware that this is Ultron’s ‘deathbed’, as it were. And then it ends with that great line about Vision being “born yesterday” before Ultron is finished off. Really cool denouement to the big action climax.

4. Hawkeye’s secret family

MCU Favorites List 04

Hooray Linda Cardellini

They say director Joss Whedon had to fight to keep this scene in, and I’m glad he did. Hawkeye’s secret family is the best part of Age of Ultron and the best possible choice for the character. We love the Marvel Cinematic Universe so much because these characters feel like real people. Just like in the comics, the focus is on these superheroes as people, with flaws, hopes, dreams, emotions, and other realistic, relatable qualities. Giving Hawkeye a secret family solved all of that! And it gave the Avengers a chance to slow things down and have real human scenes in the middle of the madness of Age of Ultron. Whether we saw Black Widow interacting with Hawkeye’s kids, all the great scenes between Hawkeye and his wife, or the cool scenes between Tony and Steve or Nat and Bruce, that whole sequence was full of great moments that really helped to ground the film.

3. Yondu’s sacrifice

Surprise manly tears

As much as I love the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, I think the second one is just a bit better, all because of the sudden impactful concern for Yondu. Who could have guessed this comedic antagonist would become the heart and soul of the sequel? And that it would work so well! But the father/son stuff in Guardians 2, coupled with the stuff between Yondu and Rocket, elevates the film to something truly touching. And then we get to the end, with the world crashing in around them, and Yondu says, “I ain’t done nothin’ right my whole life, rat. You need to give me this.” That’s the key line for me. The, “He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn’t your daddy,” is a great line, too. But “I need you to give me this,” is just killer.

2. “That’s my secret, Cap…”

The punch heard ’round the world

The Avengers, the first film, remains my favorite of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And enough nostalgia has set in that it will likely never be toppled. I still remember the excitement and energy seeing this movie in a packed theater — and this moment in particular. I was already enjoying Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner and the Hulk so far, but when he joins the big alien fight at the end, Hulks out and punches that Leviathan, it nearly took my breath away. The energy and cheers in the audience at that moment were unlike anything I’d ever experienced in a movie theater before or since. It was the moment the MCU solidified itself as the best damn action and character spectacle at the theaters.

1. Airport fight

MCU Favorites List 07

So much win!

So I started making this list and coming up with my favorite moments…only to realize that a lot of them took place during the epic airport showdown in Captain America: Civil War. So I’m just going to go with the entire airport fight! It is possibly the greatest, most entertaining and enjoyable action sequence in all of cinema history — at least as far as I’m concerned. I was already enjoying Civil War when this thing kicked off in the middle and it blew me away. Not only was it a thrilling action scene, but it was made even more so by a focus on the characters, their interactions and what they mean to one another. It wasn’t random, it was wonderfully scripted.

Hawkeye is amazing throughout this fight. Whether he’s playfully tussling with Black Widow, or chatting casually with Tony, or politely introducing himself to Black Panther, Clint is the star of the show. Then you’ve got Spider-Man’s big debut, hilariously taking on the Falcon and Winter Soldier.

My personal favorite MCU character is Ant-Man, so I loved seeing him join up with the Avengers and really get into the melee. His big Giant-Man move was fantastic, and also pretty darn funny.

The airport scene was a wonderful culmination of everything the MCU had built so far. Here’s hoping we get half a dozen scenes that top that in Avengers: Infinity War!

  1. That last picture you posted certainly demonstrates that we live in an amazing time. My younger self probably couldn’t have even handled it, LOL.

    • I hear ya! It’s unbelievable. Though now that I think about it, we’re approaching a time where more of my life has been spent in the superhero movie boom than not.

      • I was reading these characters’ comics in the late ’70s, so…yeah. It was a very different time. But we had a live-action Spider-Man TV series for a little while! With a funky soundtrack! And of course the Hulk TV show. I even remember a live-action TV show loosely based on Namor the Sub-Mariner (my dad called him the Sub-Mariner, so I believed it). And in the late ’80s we got a pretty badass live-action Hulk/Daredevil team-up movie. I really wanted to be Daredevil for a little while there…until the first Batman movie came out later that year. You know the rest. 🙂
