The Spider-Man/Marvel Movie Deal is Finally Happening!
Apparently this news hit super late last night, after I’d already gone to bed. So believe me when I say this is a good start to my day! Marvel Studios and SONY Entertainment have finally reached an official deal for Spider-Man to start appearing in Marvel movies, and for the Marvel production team to help SONY make their next Spidey flick.
What this means is that Spider-Man is going to appear in Captain America: Civil War, and then possibly future Marvel movies. And when SONY releases their next solo Spider-Man film in 2017, Marvel’s producers are going to have a hand in it, and it will also tie into the larger cinematic universe. They’re going to find a new actor to play Spider-Man, and this pushes a few of Marvel’s other movies back to later release dates.
You can read the full press release here.
Personally, I think this is cool news, but hardly necessary. The Marvel Cinematic Universe was getting along just fine without Spider-Man, and has a lot of big, exciting movies planned. As much fun as a Spider-Man cameo in Civil War is going to be, I wouldn’t want him overshadowing their plans for Black Panther in that film. And I am far far more interested in the Ant-Man, Black Panther, Dr. Strange and Captain Marvel movies than I am about yet another solo Spidey movie (even though I loved both Amazing Spider-Man films).
Plus I’m perfectly happy with Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, I thought he was great in the role. I would prefer Marvel and SONY just conscript the two Amazing Spider-Man films into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and go from there. Those films definitely fit the Marvel aesthetic. And Garfield could hold his own against Robert Downey Jr. and the others. My only request is that Marvel convince SONY to drop that ‘secret dad’ subplot that the Amazing films were obsessed with.
So what do you henchies think? Is this good, bad or are you indifferent? Sound off in the comments!

Like you, i think Spidey was doing fine on his own, and Garfield was pretty good in the role, so i feel pretty indifferent that he’s joining the MCU. Altho, thinking about it, i think my meh attitude is because i’m not all that enthused about Marvel adapting Civil War to the big screen. Especially as a Captain America movie. They should just make a stand alone movie called Civil War or whatever and make a separate Cap vehicle movie (although i realize they probably can’t since Chris Evans doesn’t want to do any more Marvel movies than he has left in his contract).
I think Civil War will make for a great Cap story! Strip away all the Civil War silliness, and you’ve got a pretty solid story about safety vs. liberty, and that’s exactly Cap’s bag.
I’m not saying Cap isn’t a major player in that story, but if you throw in Iron Man, Spidey and god knows who and how many other heroes into that movie, you’re taking the spotlight away from the guy who’s supposed to be center stage. Thats all. If they made Civil war into an ensemble movie like another Avengers one for instance, that’d be better.
It’s honestly starting to sound like Avengers 2.5.
I definitely seem to be in the minority on this, but not only am I not enthused, I’m actually unhappy about it. The MCU didn’t need Spider-Man – it was actually better off without such recognizable characters, because it forced them to be a lot smarter about their movies. Beyond that, holy shit do we actually need YET ANOTHER frigging straight white guy? Especially since it means Black Panther and Captain Marvel – the ONLY two MCU movies that DON’T have white guys in the lead roles – get delayed? And is this going to lead to him taking focus away from those characters in other movies?
If they were making a Miles Morales movie, that’s something I’d be excited about. Or, hell, if they just made Peter Parker bisexual. Just something to set him apart.
But it won’t happen. The bigger the budget, the more studios become spineless cowards who think Straight White Males are the only ones capable of saving the day. Women are love interests, people of colour are sidekicks, LGBT people are just straight-up not present.
So, yeah, this move annoys me.
I agree with you there, definitely. If this means Spidey is going to overshadow Black Panther in Civil War, then that will just be terrible. Marvel was doing just fine without Spider-Man or Wolverine. They turned Iron Man and Thor into household names. That is something to be proud of. And hopefully they are going to do the same for Black Panther and Captain Marvel.
