Supergirl Has Been Cast, Should Supergirl Become a Thing!

I’m still generally unsure about what to make of the upcoming Supergirl TV show on CBS. Apparently the show has a series commitment, so it’s definitely going to happen, but it just seems so unreal to me at this point for some reason. Maybe I still can’t accept that we live in a world where DC superhero shows are happening and are amazing!

Despite my inability to grasp reality, CBS has gone and cast actress Melissa Benoist as the Girl of Steel! She was a breakout star on Glee, and appeared in the movie Whiplash. Anybody see Whiplash? I hear it’s good.

“But she’s not blonde!” – Internet nerds

The show is going to be an hour-long drama, similar to Arrow and The Flash, though there is some concern whether or not it will share the same universe. Supergirl will be about Kara Zor-El at age 24, using the Earth name ‘Kara Danvers’. They’re really going all out on the Krypton/comic book stuff, which is great, though no word yet on whether or not Superman exists in this show. Kara will have spent her whole life hiding her powers, but a big event exposes her to the public, and she starts to become a superhero – likely with some relationship shenanigans.

If a Supergirl TV show really happens, you better believe I’ll be there to watch it!

About Sean Ian Mills

Hello, this is Sean, the Henchman-4-Hire! By day I am a mild-mannered newspaper reporter in Central New York, and by the rest of the day I'm a pretty big geek when it comes to video games, comic books, movies, cartoons and more.

  1. I’m just as cautious and unsure as you are. And I know this is really nit-picky, but “Kara Danvers” is alarmingly close to “Carol Danvers” (which is the name of Captain Marvel over at Marvel Comics, as I’m sure you’re aware). Why wouldn’t they just go with “Kara Kent”?

    • Because ‘Danvers’ is actually the name Supergirl had in the comics in the long, long time ago. It’s just a coincidence, I think, that the name is so similar to Carol Danvers. I’m pretty sure Kara wasn’t raised by the Kents at all until the cartoons.

      • HAHA. I feel like an idiot. Bless your knowledge. Regardless of comic book mythology, I still have to say that Kara Kent sounds worlds better than Kara Danvers.

      • I would agree, but adding the ‘Kents’ to the show appears to be something they’re hesitant about. Whatever this stupid embargo on Superman and Batman and the like are about. Having the Kents would imply having Clark Kent.

  2. Man you should tottally see Whiplash! Easily in my top 5 movies of 2014.

  3. I like her as the choice. I hope it connects with the arrowverse. I want the DC tv verse to make the movies look second rate.
My only worry really is for a character who hasn’t been cat yet. Jimmy Olsen. In the casting call they wanted basically a big muscle bound hunk. That aint Olsen.
    Also Whiplash was great 9.9/10
