I Hate When I’m Right – All-New X-Factor Cancelled

Writer Peter David announced earlier this month that All-New X-Factor will be cancelled by issue #20, something that didn’t really make the news until Bleeding Cool brought it up unofficially. Well now it’s official, according to PAD.

I hate to say I told you so…but I told you so. It didn’t last a year.

This is disappointing news for many reasons, but what’s there to say? It was nice of Marvel to let PAD continue X-Factor, but this All-New X-Factor version never possessed even an ounce of the spark or energy that bolstered the previous team. I saw it in the very first issue, and it remained a problem throughout the series. Heck, I even stopped reading. The comic just wasn’t very interesting.

But I’m not gonna rub any more salt in the wound. This is just sad news.

  1. yeah, David seemed really butthurt about this. i’m sure he’ll get more work, and he’s still got Spider-Man 2099. He handled it really unprofessionally tho, blaming the fans for not buying enough copies. He should’ve blamed Marvel for not marketing it correctly or pricing it correctly or including digital/trade sales… or even himself for not writing it well enough.

    • Yeah, he really seemed pissed or depressed or something in that blog post. There’s no doubt he’s still got a job somewhere, but honestly, his Spider-Man 2099 is exactly like his All-New X-Factor, in my opinion. They’re both generic, uninspired, by-the-numbers superhero comics. I doubt 2099 will last very long either.

  2. I wish I could be surprised or disappointed. I’m not surprised, because X-Factor hadn’t had strong sales for years.

I’m not more disappointed because, aside from the two most recent issues, it never quite had the X-Factor feel. some issues came close, but never quite reached it. I think the problem, for me, was Carmine Di Giandomenico. He’s a good artist, but a terrible X-Factor artist. He didn’t have a wide range of expressions. Most of the time, characters had a “Deal with it” look. This meant a lot of the dialogue fell flat, and PAD is very much a writer you read for the dialogue. The two issues by Pop Mhan were miles ahead, and were a genuine joy to read, because they were exactly what an X-Factor book should be.

I will say, though, that I kinda agree with PAD that people not buying the book is why it was cancelled. It’s the same reason why I still blame people for not buying Kathryn Immonen’s JiM run. Marvel put the book out, and gave it the promotion it arguably deserved given its position within the company. More promotion wouldn’t have done anything for the sales. people refused to buy it because it wasn’t an “important” book. It didn’t have Spider-Man, Wolverine or any of the movie Avengers. And comic book readers are idiots who only read a fairly limited range of books.

    • I couldn’t agree more. The comic book fan community is probably always shrinking, and there are just too few who want to try something new and interesting.

I didn’t know a new artist took over for a few issues. I need to check those out!

  3. for me, no shatterstar and rictor, no interest
