It Seems I Missed Some Awesome Bebop and Rocksteady News!

I’ve already said it a few times on this blog recently, but I have developed a new respect for Bebop and Rocksteady in my growing years. I don’t think I much cared for them in the 80s, when they were bumbling henchmen to the Shredder in the old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. But as I grow older, I find myself liking them and their potential more and more.

Which is why I’m so ashamed that I missed this awesome Bebop and Rocksteady news from earlier this year!

They’ll probably moider me now!

Fortunately, there’s been a new bump in content, so I can safely announce it today without too much Internet scorn.

Is anybody else watching the new Ninja Turtles cartoon on Nickelodeon? It’s actually a very good show. The animation is top notch, the mythology is expertly crafted; it really is a love letter to all things awesome about the Ninja Turtles. I have nothing but good things to say about the cartoon – except that their villains are terrible. All of them. Across the board. For the most part.

Fortunately, that’s about to change!

In the interest of SPOILERS, I’m going to wait until after the jump to reveal the awesome news!

Bebop and Rocksteady are finally going to appear in the Ninja Turtles cartoon on Nickelodeon!

Season 2 is about to wrap in September, and then sometime in Season 3, the warthog and the rhino are going to get mutated into some pretty gnarly looking mutants!

As only a warthog and a rhino could

Rocksteady looks pretty awesome, though personally, I think Bebop is a little on the skinny side.

That picture apparently hit the web back in the Spring, but somehow I missed it completely. I only heard about it this week when images of their upcoming action figures hit the web.

Bebop needs to find a shirt that can close

Oh yes, I will be buying both of those. I need some proper Bebop and Rocksteady representation on my Geek Wall.

But wait, you say, doesn’t that Bebop look strikingly familiar? Doesn’t he look like a certain…thief?

Why yes, you’re right! If you’ve been watching the cartoon right along, then you might be surprised to learn that we’ve already met Bebop and Rocksteady, at least in their human forms. In the Season 2 episode The Legend of the Kuro Kabuto, we’re introduced to Russian mobster Steranko and his thief-for-hire, Anton Zeck. Personally, I didn’t care for either of them at the time.

They were both just really weird dudes

But it turns out, that’s Bebop and Rocksteady!

I don’t know how or why they’re going to be mutated, but I love that the writers went to the trouble of introducing the two of them ahead of time before their mutations. That’s what I mean by the show being expertly put together. The writers put in a lot of time and effort into building a great show, with a lot of care and attention paid to small details like seeding Bebop and Rocksteady long before their eventual mutations.

It’s just neat.

Oh! I almost forgot! Guess who else is going to appear in Season 3?

He’s so adorable! And radical!

  1. I completely agree with you about the villains, they have been very lacklustre and not interesting in the slightest. But hopefully the addition of bebop and rocksteady will change that. Love this show.

    • The thing I loved most about the original 80s cartoon was the wide variety of mutants! Both on the show and in the toys. I just loved all the humanoid animals and how they just expanded the mythology and supporting cast. But the new show has done a piss poor job of recreating that same feeling. It would be one thing if they didn’t bother with other mutants, but the show is filled with them, and they all look either stupid or weird. Few of the other mutants follow the Turtles/Splinter route of being walking, talking, humanoid animals. There’s Snakeweird, Spiderbytes, the Squirrelnoids, that pigeon guy, Fish Face; all very odd creations. I just think they’ve made some very poor choices in terms of other mutants. Like how come when Kirby became a bat, he alone was some weird, hideous beast monster whereas other human/mutants get to be mostly normal?

      Rant over.
