Just When You Thought Cyclops Couldn’t Get Any More Awesome!

I want to consider my blog a bastion of pro-Cyclops ideology and understanding. Because even though I was, at times, frustrated with his portrayal during Avengers vs. X-Men, Marvel are clearly turning him into the greatest hero ever in the aftermath!

I don’t want to spoil too much right away – I’ll save that for the jump – but suffice to say, from almost everything I’ve seen post-AvX, Marvel seems poised to do some exciting things with Cyclops in the future. More and more, it looks intentional that Marvel and their writers knew exactly what they were doing with Cyclops in Avengers vs. X-Men, and I am absolutely loving it! The character is on this fascinating journey, and not some cliched apologetic quest for redemption.

Cyclops is a total boss! As we can see in a few previews of the upcoming All-New X-Men #1! Join me for more after the jump to view them!

As I mentioned the other day, Cyclops laid out his entire argument in the pages of AvX: Consequences #2. Wolverine went to visit him in prison full of vinegar and self-righteousness, and Cyclops completely put Logan in his place concerning Cyclops’ role in what went down. And the best part is that Cyclops isn’t being portrayed as some whiny child begging to be forgiven by Wolverine and Captain America. He’s a man who recognizes the horrors of what happened and isn’t afraid to accept responsibility, even if his actions were controlled by the Dark Phoenix. He’s also not stupid or arrogant enough to think he’s some kind of God now, or a villain. He sees clearly how the superhero world now views him, and he understands what that means for his life and his reputation.

I could go on and on, but basically, I am very excited at how Cyclops is being portrayed (in most places) in the aftermath of Avengers vs. X-Men.

Well it looks like the Awesome Train will continue, based on these previews of All-New X-Men #1. It appears that Cyclops is going to somehow get out of prison, and then team up with Magneto and Emma Frost to go around helping all of the newly powered mutants. That is phenomenal!

Unfortunately, this means I’m probably going to have to buy All-New X-Men, which I really don’t want to do.

Don’t get me wrong, the idea of Brian Michael Bendis writing the flagship X-Men series is a great idea. I wouldn’t miss it…under normal circumstances. Instead, the story will be about the original five X-Men (including Cyclops) traveling to the present day and basically being all upset at how their future turns out. That is a ridiculously stupid idea for an ongoing series. I want to read Bendis’ take on the current X-Men, not on some time-traveling bozos who are going to get all grumpy.

There’s a modicum of an interesting idea in this. Alternate Futures are a staple of superhero comics, and to the original five X-Men from the 1960s, the present day would look like a weird, alternate future. As an ongoing series, however, I have very little interest in seeing what those teenage versions of the X-Men think of the present. I imagine there will be pages upon pages of them complaining about how Cyclops killed Professor X and is now a villain. Is Marvel really that desperate to get Jean Grey back into circulation? I mean, heck, they killed off Nightcrawler, only to bring in an alternate reality Nightcrawler to take his place. Maybe just stop needlessly killing your characters…

Beast is a blue-furred traitor, Angel has lost all his memories and personality and is essentially a whole new person, and Marvel Girl is dead. Boohoo. The only one of the original X-Men who is pretty stable is Iceman (coincidentally  my favorite of the original X-Men).

So yeah, I don’t know what to tell you. I hate the premise, but I like the idea of Bendis writing the X-Men, and I absolutely love the idea of Cyclops as a rogue mutant hero, doing his damn job to help mutants even if Wolverine and the establishment are mad at him.

I might even consider adding All-New X-Men to my review cache…

About Sean Ian Mills

Hello, this is Sean, the Henchman-4-Hire! By day I am a mild-mannered newspaper reporter in Central New York, and by the rest of the day I'm a pretty big geek when it comes to video games, comic books, movies, cartoons and more.

  1. Iceman’s definitely stable. He’s been consistently dull and lacking a personality right from the start.

I honestly have no idea how much Marvel expected readers to side with Scott. I have trouble believing they expected him to get as much support as he has. It seems like Bendis might support Scott, though, which is hilarious given he’s spent the past few years writing the Avengers. I really hope he doesn’t depict Scott negatively in ANXM. I don’t want him as an antagonist there.

  2. I can’t believe that Cyclops goes back to Emma Frost. No way the Phoenix made her make out with Namor. That wouldn’t even make sense. She’s a two-timing tramp and now that Cyclops is the greatest Super hero in Marvel comics, he deserves a better lady. If it wasn’t for the obvious and inherent problems, I’d say Captain Marvel or maybe Spider-Woman.

And if you want, I could probably get New X-Men. Maybe I’ll do a subscription or just take the train to NYC. Either way, it isn’t fair that you have to get all the comics. I also like Cyclops more than you. And I also like the original X-Men more than you since everyone knows Wolverine ruined the X-Men. Then I’ll probably have to post spoiler-filled reviews here so you can know what’s going on without having to read it. It works for me with your Scarlet Spider and X-Factor reviews.

    Anyways, your call.

    • I’ll let you know. I’m definitely tempted to try it out on my own. But anytime you want to start buying more comics, just let me know.

    • Well, Cyclops two-timed Jean Grey as well. He admits so himself. I don’t think the Frost/Summers relationship is irreparable. They’re both mature adults, after all. I am rooting for Jean/Scott/Emma just to troll readers, though.

Anyways, Sean, as I don’t quite share your optimism regarding Bendis writing an X-Men book, I’ll be deferring to your blog for updates on this book if you do decide to review them. To me, Bendis feels like a death-sentence for the X-Books, particularly regarding Cyclops. I’m reasonably sure he will jump at every opportunity to make Cyclops a villain just so his original characters- the Original 5- will become important to whatever fanfiction he is writing.

      • I do hope that’s not the case, for that will make me a sad panda. I’m typically a fan of Bendis’ work wherever I find it, so I’m confident he knows what he’s doing.

Also, Emma Frost is super hot, don’t forget that.

      • Emma Frost is definitely super hot. I’m greatly saddened where the Stepford Cuckoos are at the moment 😦

Anyhow, I’m not confident Bendis can do the X-Men justice the same way Brubaker, Whedon, Gillen, and Morrison did. His current idea sounds like the craziness you’d only find in fanfiction– and I can tell you, I’ve read a lot of stories like this already. The vast majority are crap meant for the author to wank themselves silly (which is fine considering the medium), while those that do start off great inevitably degenerate to griping and whining that doesn’t make any sense. In the original 5’s case, any arguments they make don’t have any weight to them; they’ve never experienced what their counterparts have.

  3. Break It Like Bendis's avatar Break It Like Bendis

The writer of this article is clearly an idiot. AVX was a comic abortion that ruined the character Cyclops, and has paved yet another mile-high layer of SUCK to the Marvel Universe.

GET BENDIS THE FUCK OUT OF MARVEL!!!!!!!!!

  4. Wesley Highbarger's avatar Wesley Highbarger

Cyclops is undiniably the badass of X-Men and avx consequences should be called Cyclops because he is the star in that title. I’m happy to see he is back in tights.

    • Agreed! And issue #3 came out today and it was just as awesome as the first two issues! The final sequence was absolutely golden!

      • That was sheer brilliance right there at the end of #3; Gillen’s such a creative writer housing a mind brimming with cool ideas. I’m pretty sure that was Erik conversing with Cyclops, as well (though Hope’s monologue does suggest it is Cable). I’m not sure what to make of the scene between Kitty and Emma, but I trust Gillen to know what he’s doing. The Extinction Team really was an awesome bunch under Gillen’s pen that it’s really sad to see both of them go.

Next Wednesday really can’t come any sooner!

      • That was definitely Magneto talking with Cyclops, doing so by moving around the small metal particles. That was an awesome use of Magneto, I think.

And the scene between Kitty and Emma is because all of the AvX ‘winners’ need to get their gloat on, and Kitty could finally wave her smug superiority in Emma’s face with blissful glee!

  5. beast has clearly lost his mind.

    • Beast is…iffy, these days. He leaves Utopia because he doesn’t like Cyclops’ X-Force, so Cyclops shuts it down. Yet when Beast finds out Wolverine started it up again, he’s more than glad to stay on Wolverine’s team. Beast is kind of just doing whatever the writers want him to do, poor bastard.
