Project: Rooftop Fantastic Four Designs Are In!
The Project: Rooftop Fantastic Four redesign costumes are in, and they are, pardon the pun, fantastic! If you don’t know, Project: Rooftop is a site dedicated to redesigning superhero costumes. They hold annual contests and even have some pros weigh in on the contestants. These contests produce some of the absolute coolest costume redesigns on the Internet. And I absolutely love this kind of artistic geekery. If only the real comic book companies relied on creative types like these when it came to giving their heroes new costumes.
The best DC Comics can come up with is to add a ton of piping and lines to their new superhero reboot costumes.
Anyway, check out the #1 entry, drawn by Alejandro Bruzzese!
Personally, I’m not a big fan of this design. I like what he was going for, with the color-coded T-shirts, but it doesn’t say ‘Fantastic’ to me. It definitely plays up the explorers/adventurnauts aspect of the Fantastic Four, but it’s not as elegant or awesome as it could be. Still, the judges voted this one as the very best, so who am I to argue?
Join me after the jump for the other winners and a couple of my favorites!
The second place winner is a much more futuristic and classy design by Vanni LoRiggio.
This design definitely has style coming out the wazoo! These look like superhero costumes if the Four were going to a wedding or something fancy. You wouldn’t want to get them dirty. But the design just has so much class and style that it works, especially uniform for all four of them. I like the blue top over white pants look, especially with the different shades of blue. It’s quite elegant. Though I always feel bad when the Thing doesn’t get to wear shoes. I know his feet are rocks, but it’s just human instinct to wear covering on your feet.
The third place winner decides to let the Human Torch be his own man with a more casual design. I like this one by Victor Newman.
You can’t really get a good look at Reed and Sue’s outfits, but the blue bodysuit with coat variation seems to be the style. I like it. I like when the Fantastic Four wears something other than just plain bodysuits. So I definitely like the Human Torch’s open jacket, and his red costume. It doesn’t hurt to have him standout with red against the typical blue of the other three. He’s the Human Torch, for cryin’ out loud! The Thing doesn’t get much more than his standard blue trunks, but that’s alright. He’s apparently comfortable like that. More power to him.
Now if you’re looking for classy and classic, you can’t do much better than one of my personal favorites, by Claire Hummel.
You’ve got the neat blue bodysuit design, a great uniform look and an absolutely wicked logo redesign. A lot of these images have cool new ‘4’ logo redesigns, and I really like this one. It probably wouldn’t look all threat great on letterhead or emblazoned across the sky in orange flame, but it looks neat on the outfits themselves. And I like the Thing’s outfit. It’s always cool when an artist tries to give the Thing a shirt, and this one is really sleek, really shows off his rocky muscles.
But if you don’t like the idea of a sleek, sexy Thing, how about this insanely awesome and monstrous Thing by Ransom Getty.
Holy guacamole, that picture is insane! I’ve never seen the Thing look that extreme before, but I love it! He may be a monster, but he’s still got that telltale smirk. And the other characters look just as crazy, with a grizzled Mr. Fantastic, a flighty Invisible Woman and a cock, flaming Human Torch. Getty went with the matching jumpsuits, but definitely didn’t stick with the usual blue bodysuit idea. He’s got new colors, a very original logo and really pushes the athletic look. I love it! It doesn’t hurt that they’re wearing Syracuse University colors, of course.
For the next picture, let’s dial back the insanity but increase the originality with a uniform, but unique design by Todd Loessy.
This is one of the sleekest designs in the contest, and I definitely think that’s an advantage. It’s like a Star Trek version of the Fantastic Four. I definitely like the individuality in the colors, even if brown has never really been the Thing’s color. He’s usually a more colorful guy. Still, this look is very uniform and very cool; it’s got that modern, minimalist vibe that’s all the rage these days. Though I’m never in favor of superhero costumes without some kind of belt or waist accessory, because then it really, really looks like they’re walking around in their pajamas.
Those are my favorites. You can check out the full list by clicking here, plus there will be even more on Friday!
Or maybe you’d just be happy with Nathan Nelson’s redesign of the Evil Fantastic Four!
