Daredevil Could Have Been Gangsta

So it looks like the film rights to Daredevil will revert back to Marvel/Disney in October. There had been some talk about Marvel and Fox trading Galactus for an extension on the film rights, but I didn’t report on it because I considered it just boring Hollywood talk. And obviously it didn’t pan out anyway. This new wrinkle in the Daredevil rights saga, however, has been confirmed by the (now former) new director, Joe Carnahan.

I actually liked Ben Affleck’s Daredevil, especially the director’s cut

I don’t really know what this might mean for the Marvel Movieverse. Marvel and Disney already have a pretty full slate of movies planned all the way through 2015. Would they try and squeeze a new Daredevil flick in there just because they can? I would hope they hold on to Daredevil for awhile until they know exactly what to do with him – and I hope that doesn’t mean he joins the Avengers.

Anyways, Carnahan is apparently a man who loves his fans, and so he’s posted online two sizzle reels for what his take on Daredevil would have been like. They appear to be pseudo-trailers using old footage and comic book panels to try and create the feel of a bombastic 1970s-style thriller.

Here is the general audience sizzle reel:

And here is the grittier, more violent NC-17 version:

  1. Good, for a moment I thought I was the only person that liked that movie. Those trailers were cool and to be honest I cant see why he cant still do that movie for marvel, is he under a contract with FOX or something? But those trailers just gave me an idea, its foolish and its never going to happen but marvel right now has a lot of the rights for character they are not using, but like you said they cant just rush a movie and make him an avenger for the sake of it, how about if they do what Carnahan showed in the trailers and put Daredevil in the 70s, but they put a lot of more of their properties there, like a 70s-80s marvel cinematic universe, hell it could be the same universe but in the 70s-80s, with a little reference here and there, but more gritty and street like, with the Punisher fresh from Vietnam, Moon Knight and his multiple personalities issue, maybe even “Heroes for hire” if they are not using them, Chances are its never going to happen and even I cant see how it could work, but a man can dream right?

    • I don’t think he’s under contract with Fox, but Marvel is definitely going to want to just shed anything that has to do with Fox’s development of any Daredevil movie. Marvel has a really successful thing going on their own, they have no need to rely on anyone else. And a 70s-80s era Marvel Movieverse might work…but they stand to be more successful if they just keep building their present day universe. The more all these movies are linked, I think, the more popular they will be.
