The 6 Best Cameos on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

Fair warning, I’m feeling especially adorable this week. Want to know the geekiest show on television? It’s not Big Bang Theory. Nor is it Game of Thrones. The title has to go to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic! Not only is it a cartoon that has taken fandom by storm, but it is clearly produced by some giddy geeks.

Prepare for horse puns. So many horse puns

What makes me say this? How about the simple fact that they’ve taken a cartoon about cutesy, colorful ponies and filled it with more pop culture references and background jokes than your average episode of Family Guy! And at My Little Pony, they’re actually clever about it. Clearly for the sheer fun of it, the people behind My Little Pony love showing off their geek cred.

Join me after the jump for the 6 best pop culture character cameos on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic!

My Little Pony-Con Song by voice actresses from the show

Every once in a nightmare moon, you get a programme like MLP:  Friendship is Magic.  With its stars and producers freely interacting with the Internet at large and catering to a fanbase that’s grown into the millions, MLP has established itself as a classic show in the same vein as the Powerpuff Girls and Dexter’s Lab despite only beginning its third series.

This is where we mention Brony-Con.  Or rather, I’ll let the show’s voice actresses do it for me:

Batman vs. Bronies!

My love for Batman and my love for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic are well documented on this blog. But what happens when the Dark Knight turns his attention on this potentially insidious pop culture clique?

That was awesome, and so incredibly well drawn! That is some quality animation right there. The cartoon was made by James Lee Animation, who I’m going to have to keep an eye on for future gems!

My Little Follow-Up: Derpy Sort of Rides Again

In this weekend’s episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, muffin-loving fan favourite Derpy Hooves appeared in the background as a new character tried to teach the ponies (namely Fluttershy) how to be assertive.

In this cameo, Derpy appears to have been re-derped. Is this Hasbro’s way of apologising to the fans after the iTunes outrage last week, or has Hasbro decided to let Derpy derp after all? We’ll keep you updated.
