Necromancer in Diablo 3?
Check out who makes a cameo in Diablo 3!
Why it’s our old pal the Necromancer from Diablo 2! He was part of a random occurrence/special event that I stumbled across in the desert in Act II the other night while playing on Nightmare Difficulty. Necromancer was my favorite class in Diablo 2, and the first class I used to beat that old game ten years ago. There have been a few Diablo 2 Easter Eggs in this new game that I’ve found (poor Warriv), and this one is so far the neatest.
He’s even got an army of skeletons walking about. The guy looks exactly like the Diablo 2 Necromancer class. I think he even references the previous character.
I just thought this was a neat little cameo to share with everybody. I’m still playing Diablo 3 and am highly enjoying it. And I do have a review coming – more than a month after the game was released. I’m not a big time fancy website, so my video game reviews have to wait until I’ve found the time to beat the game. But anyone who is interested, that review is coming.
For now, just bask in the fun that is the Necromancer! Could this be a hint at what new character classes we might see in the inevitable Diablo 3 Expansion Pack?
Djibouti is Making Friends
So I’m kind of going to treat this like an ongoing review of Diabo 3, and then I’ll probably write a full review once I beat the game. I’m still having a ton of fun, and have even started some side characters. But my main man, Djibouti the Witch Doctor, is still kicking ass. Last night I beat Act 1, and we’ve moved on from Tristram to a new desert level…just like in Diablo 2. Does Blizzard really like desert levels?
Plus Diablo has a friend! Eurydice the Monk! She’s played by my girlfriend and frequent co-op partner, 1wombat4u.
That’s us in the new desert city Caldeum. We haven’t gone in yet, but no doubt it will be even more exciting than Act 1 in New Tristram!
I’m still definitely enjoying the game. It plays exactly like the earlier Diablos, and they were great as well. It’s one of the most pure RPGs out there. You fight monsters, you explore dungeons, you arm and armor yourself with the loot that drop sand you keep going. I love those kinds of games. And with a friend, it’s even better. Though it’s a shame that most of the loot you find is only good for selling, and even then most of it is only worth 2 or 3 gold a piece. Djibouti has had the same stinking dagger for 5 levels now. Finding one with a higher damage rating just doesn’t happen very often.
And I’ve decided not to bother with the Auction House. It would just take too much effort.
One thing I’m loving about this game is that they’ve done away with the traditional melee attack. I was wary at first, because melee is an old standard. It’s how Diablo 2 used to work. You clicked on a monster to attack them with your weapon, and that was it. Spells and special attacks were controlled separately. Melee is still in Diablo 3 if you want it, but they have done so much more! Each class has a special attack that replaces your basic melee. Instead of costing you Mana or whatever your character uses to cast spells and special attacks, this new basic special doesn’t cost a thing. Sometimes it even adds to your pool.
For example, ‘Bash’ is a fairly simple attack for the Barbarian class. You could Bash in Diablo 2. It was basically just hitting the monsters harder with your equipped weapon than a basic attack, but it still cost Mana.
Not anymore. Now Bash adds to your Mana pool, and costs you nothing to simply use Bash as your primary attack. So every single hit I make against a monster is a Bash. Which means combat is just that much more badass.
Djibouti has a Poison Dart attack like this. I could stand people with my dagger, if I want, but the Poison Dart attack takes my weapon damage and increases it! This concept may be difficult to explain without actually experiencing it, but I’m kind of expecting a lot of my readers to also be playing Diablo 3. So I’m sure you understand. It’s just awesome and makes fighting much more intense than basic melee combat. I love it.
Djibouti is getting up in level, and soon I’ll have access to all the awesome powers that come with being a Witch Doctor. Like Rain of Frogs, Zombie Wall or Locust Swarm! I can’t wait to show you those!
Djibouti is Starting to Look Like a Proper Witch Doctor
After two days of playing, Diablo 3 remains a fun game. And now my Witch Doctor character, Djibouti, finally has some gear that makes him look like a proper Witch Doctor. No doubt some even better gear is on the horizon, but I feel like sharing.
Diablo 3 has done a great job with individual characters. I’ve discovered that both genders for each of the five character classes (Witch Doctor, Barbarian, Monk, Sorcerer and Demon Hunter) are not only fully voice-acted, but have unique cut scenes devoted to each character. Granted the cut scenes are pictures and not actual movies, but still, impressive stuff.
For a Witch Doctor, Djibouti is pretty noble.
I haven’t managed to do anything too cool yet, other than to kill the Skeleton King, but who is that really? The first level explores the old Cathedral from Diablo 1, so that was kind of neat. As a Witch Doctor, Djibouti can conjure zombie dogs, flaming bats and poisonous frogs to attack my foes. He can also throw a jar full of spiders at them. I definitely picked the right class.
So I Started Diablo 3 After All
Meet Djibouti the Witch Doctor.
As recent as last week, I wasn’t too concerned about Diablo 3. Despite loving Diablos 1 and 2, this gamer wasn’t salivating for Diablo 3 like most people out there in video game land. I don’t know what was wrong with me. I’ve pretty much loved every game Blizzard has released, from Warcraft to Starcraft, and I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Diablo 3 would be awesome. How could it not? But I just wasn’t all that interested.
Fast forward to yesterday, when my girlfriend (1wombat4u) and I decided to take the plunge and buy the game. $60 is no chump change, but I’m an adult now, with a job and disposable income. Might as well spend it on something fun.
And I’ve gotta say, Diablo 3 is definitely a lot of fun so far. We didn’t experience any of the server problems that everyone else is claiming about, and I have no real opinion on the DRM issue, which requires that players have an active Internet connection at all times to play a game, even in single player. That sort of thing just doesn’t bug me. I live in a city, there’s probably always going to be Internet in my neighborhood. And considering some of the connection problems Wombat and I have had with past games, being able to just jump into a Diablo 3 game together was a blast. A friend of ours even showed up later in the evening and was able to just jump right into our game without any hassle. That was awesome.
The game is so far standard Diablo. It looks the same as previous games, albeit with better graphics, animations and voice work. My character, Djibouti, is fully voiced and can chat with quest-givers or townsfolk. The game even has character specific cut scenes, though I don’t yet know if it also has gender specific cut scenes. There are no dialogue trees to pick my own responses, but Diablo isn’t that kind of a game. I kill monsters, I pick up loot and I play pack rat, bringing a full satchel of loot back to town to sell, even if everything is broken and only worth $2 or $3. I’m a huge pack rat in Diablo games, selling nearly everything I find, no matter how many trips back to town it takes. This always gives me a huge pile of gold later in the game, though I rarely splurge on the super expensive items.
So in most games like this, I kind of just save my money for the sake of saving my money…if only I did that in real life.
The classes include Barbarian, Sorcerer, Demon Hunter, Monk and Witch Doctor. I picked Witch Doctor because clearly it was the most awesome choice out of those five. The rest are standard RPG classes, whereas Witch Doctor is unique and cool. It seems he’s going to be like the old Necromancer class, able to summon zombies, zombie dogs and other minions to fight his fights. That sounds cool to me.
I will keep you all posted on my progress, just for kicks. Though this game isn’t going to be as unique as Skyrim, with my orc Tannenbaum. Right now we’re simply making our way through Act I. We visited old Tristram, and went into the cathedral, but unfortunately there were no Wurt references this time around. I suppose we did take his leg in Diablo 2, and we killed Griswold, so it’s not like they’d still be around. Oh well, fun to visit the old locale.
I would love to hear about your Diablo 3 characters in the comments. Maybe we can play together someday.
