6 Things I’m Doing on My Vacation
When I went home to see my extended family for Labor Day, and informed them that I planned to stay home for my week-long vacation, they were flabbergasted! How could I even think of not going on some luxurious trip? I have a whole 10 days off! Surely I could go on some kind of awesome adventure!
Nope! I’m broke and my car is a unsteady these days, with the ‘check engine’ light popping on every time I drive out of the city. So it’s a staycation for me!
Being a chubby comic book nerd who doesn’t like sports, bars or sports bars, I’ve spent my entire life enjoying myself at home. I think we’ve already established that I love video games, TV and movies. But I’ve also put off a lot of other projects because I knew this week was coming up.
So if you’re eager for a look inside the life of your favorite blogger, join me after the jump!
Pandas Kicking Ass
Revel, my friends, in the Mists of Pandaria!
World of Warcraft definitely knows how to make a damn good cinematic. We’re barely more than a month away from the next expansion pack to World of Warcraft, and already they’ve graced us with an awesome cinematic trailer showing just how cool the Pandaren monks will be. Don’t believe me? Just watch both Kung Fu Panda movies; clearly inspired by the Pandarens.
I have been waiting for the pandarens to join World of Warcraft since it came out, so I’m rather excited. I haven’t played WoW in more than two years, but I’m getting back on board just for a chance to create and play my own Pandaren Brewmaster. It’s just something I want to do with my life. I already bought the Lich King and Cataclysm expansions that I still need to install, which is probably how I’m going to spend my vacation in September. There’s a lot of preparation going into Mists of Pandaria for me.
But most importantly of all, I need to come up with a good Pandaren Brewmaster name…
How I Would Write the World of Warcraft Movie
The news that Legendary Pictures is trying again to move forward with a World of Warcraft movie fills me with nothing. Not excitement. Not boredom. Not even mild interest. They’ve been trying to get such a movie off the ground for years, and even Spider-Man director Sam Raimi was attached for the longest time.
But Hollywood being Hollywood, the development has gone nowhere. I don’t think I will ever fully understand why these movie-making companies can never just make the damn movies. But that’s also why I don’t want to work in Hollywood.
For what it’s worth, some dude named Charles Leavitt has been brought on to write a new script. Apparently he’s written some other movies for Legendary before, and they like him. So la de da for him. I’m going to file the World of Warcraft movie in my ‘When Pigs Fly’ folder alongside the Halo movie. I never believe a movie is going to get made until production actually begins. It’s why I don’t usually write about this kind of news.
But then I got to thinking…how do you cram the entirety of the World of Warcraft franchise into a 2-hour movie? What would the story be? Who are the characters? Do you stick with established lore and continuity, or do you throw all of that away and write a totally new adventure?
Being both a huge fan of Warcraft and something of a creative person myself, I’ve decided to try my hand at the script for the World of Warcarft movie. One that sticks to the established story, but takes some liberties as well. Join me after the jump to see my idea!
World of Warcraft Legos are Real!
If by ‘real’ you understand that to mean they’re coming out soon.
And if by ‘Legos’ you understand that to mean the crappy knock-off Mega Bloks.
But still, Mega Bloks has gone ahead and actually made World of Warcraft playsets! They’ve got almost a dozen already, including dragons, monsters, and more. And each one comes with a few tiny little WoW characters! You can check out all of the models here, but I’ve posted some of my favorites. Check this one out, it’s the Goblin Zeppelin!
You may recall that World of Warcraft was at the top of my list of 6 properties that need to be made into Legos, so this is kind of a dream come true. I know that Mega Bloks are inferior products, but I may just have to buy myself some of these models. They just look cool. The figurines are much more detailed and expressive than Lego mini-figs, and the designs are just fantastic. Oddly, though, there are no female figurines. Which is weird, considering how many female WoW players there are – and how many men play as female characters. Still, most of the races are represented, like my favorite, the orcs.
Apparently these sets are going to come out this summer. There is a mix of single figurine sets, like the orc one above, and sets with mounts and other vehicles. If you’re wondering how Mega Blok is going to get actual building sets out of these, I don’t need to remind you that World of Warcraft has started including actual vehicles. They have rockets, whirlybirds, tanks, and even this goblin motorcycle.
6 Licensed Properties That Need Lego Love
I love Legos! They were one of my favorite toys when I was a kid, and I still have a Lego Batmobile and Lego TIE interceptor on display on my Geek Wall. The fun of building whatever your imagination can think up never gets old. From giant handheld swords to small, intricate castles and spaceships. I grew up in the Silver Age of Legos, when the big sets were pirates, castle, space and modern day. I can still remember the excitement of the Wolf Pack bandits, the Ice Planet spacemen and the introduction of the undersea play sets. I also owned the time machine, which was basically just throwing all the sets together into one toy.
But nowadays the most popular Lego playsets are all licensed properties, like Star Wars, Batman, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean and more!
And I think it’s brilliant! I would have killed to have these kinds of Legos when I was a kid. Instead of making my own crappy Batmobile out of green and red pieces, I could have had a real, well-made Batmobile complete with little Batman and Robin figurines. Or Lex Luthor in his battlesuit fighting an actual licensed Superman and Wonder Woman! Instead of random space people in their little helmets and jetpacks, I could have had Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon!
This year, Lego is coming out with sets for Lord of the Rings, the Avengers, the X-Men and more. So the licensed property train is not stopping. Here are 6 properties out there that need some Lego love!
