A Robin Retcon Done Right

The other day, I was grousing about a comic retcon where it’s going to be revealed that Wolverine put together a team of mutants long before Charles Xavier even cared. That Wolverine formed the ‘First X-Men’. I called this a “stupid retcon”, and my opinion has not changed. It is very stupid, and the worst sort of comic book tampering that’s done to history and continuity.

But this is not to say that all retcons are bad. In fact, I’d like to share with you a retcon that DC Comics is right in the middle of that is actually kind of cool. And it’s a retcon involving one of my absolute favorite characters of all time: Robin!

Well, Nightwing, but same difference

You know I’d be extra pissed if they messed up Robin. In actuality, however, this Court of Owls retcon is kind of badass, and adds to Robin’s history, rather than detracts. Join me after the jump to learn what they’ve changed, and why this is a much better retcon than First X-Men.

Robin Kicking Ass in Sweet New ‘Harley’s Revenge’ Trailer

I need to hurry up and beat Diablo 3 soon, because the new DLC for Batman: Arkham City is right around the corner. Everything has been confirmed. It’s a full story-style mission, tying up the loose ends of Arkham City. And it’s going to feature Robin in game mode, sneaking through levels and taking down bad guys. How awesome is that? Rocksteady are clearly proud of their badass Robin redesign. And they should be. This is the coolest Robin has been in ages.

Sadly though, Robin won’t be able to go out and explore the rest of Arkahm City, which is just stupid. Would it really be that difficult to program Robin into the rest of the game world? Probably…what do I know about video game programming?

Anyway, enjoy the trailer!

The Avengers Reject Batman

The Avengers parody video continue! Because that movie made $200 million+ at the US box office over the weekend, a certain Caped Crusader with a movie out in July is getting a little antsy. And if you can’t beat’em, join’em! If they’ll let you. Also there’s Robin in it, so I’m definitely going to post it. The video may also have some off-color humor if you’re not into that kind of thing.

Review: Teen Titans #8

So everybody gets new Tron-inspired costumes! That’s got to count for something, right? Why do they get Tron-inspired costumes? Who knows! But apparently that’s what NOWHERE does when it captures young metahumans. So if nothing else, I can at least stop complaining about how lame NOWHERE is as the bad guy. They finally step up their game in this issue to reveal some pretty nasty goings ons.

Teen Titans #8

Unfortunately, that doesn’t make for a good issue. But at least it’s not as terrible as last month.

Comics rating: 2/5: Bad.

At the end of the last issue, the Teen Titans were grabbed by the evil Harvest and NOWHERE. This issue gets pretty freaky. NOWHERE has some people who can warp reality, so the Titans are put through some really weird, sometimes confusing torture shenanigans. The idea is to break the Titans by revealing their inner most secrets, except that nobody has very interesting secrets. We get little vignettes about each character, but none of them really build the characters up at all. At the very least it puts the Titans in a precarious situation as they gear up for the big crossover event with Superboy and Legion Lost (for some reason).

Though somebody get guest artist Ig Guara away from superhero comics immediately. Ig Guara is a good artist, but holy cow do some of his characters absolutely suck. When your costumed superhero looks like a kid wearing big, uncomfortable pajamas, you were not destined to draw superhero comics.

More Arkham City – Harley Quinn’s Revenge?

Rumors and speculation are swirling around the Internet today about new DLC for Batman: Arkham City that will feature all new story segments centered around Harley Quinn! Not only that, but these same rumors indicate that Robin will be a playable character! So that definitely gets my heart all a flutter.

Harley has that effect on nerds

But don’t just take my word for it. Click on over to PS3Trophies.org, where they have uncovered a list of game achievements for the new Harley DLC. This site is pretty reliable, because their skill at uncovering achievements was also the first indication that Nightwing was going to join the game.

You’ll have to scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the new achievements.

The last few DLCs for Arkahm City, involving Robin and Nightwing, both only had 2 new achievements apiece, and both only featured the characters in a series of challenge maps. But if we read those new achievements for the Harley DLC closely, we can see that they indicate something much more than just a challenge map. So could it be new story content?

Example: Breaking and Entering: Find a way into the secret base.

And one of the achievements points to more playtime for Robin!

A Few New Tricks: Use 5 different Quickfire gadgets in one fight as Robin in Harley Quinn’s Revenge.

Unfortunately, there’s no indication when this DLC will come out, what it will entail or how much it will cost. And it seems that Warner Bros. isn’t commenting on the record yet. So who knows when it will come out? All I know is that I’m now incredibly excited! Time to dust off my copy of Batman: Arkham City!
