My Thoughts on Catwoman’s Movie Costume

UPDATE: New theory about Catwoman’s mask added to story. Look for the blinking .gif.

New images of Anne Hathaway in full Catwoman costume have been circulating the Interwebs over the past day or two, taken candidly by onlookers at the set of The Dark Knight Rises. I didn’t want to comment on the costume because, first of all, we don’t yet know if it’s the final version, and second of all, I’m not a fan of these types of candid set shots. I wanted to wait for an officially released photo. But it’s a slow day for geeky news, so I figured there’s more than one way to skin a cat, so I’m going for it.

I don’t like the costume. It’s too glam.

She's a Barbie girl, in a Batman world

This picture is terrible. Anne Hathaway looks like a Barbie doll, walking around as if she were made of plastic. That’s why I wanted to wait for the official shots. But other than just the creepy, thin sort of look, the costume just isn’t good. There are parts I like. I definitely like the style it’s going for, with the leather and the zipper. The costume definitely invokes a more utilitarian look than spandex superhero. It’s the mask I don’t like.

Batman: Year One is On Its Way!

The next DC animated movie, Batman: Year One, comes out next month. DC released this cool teaser scene this week. The scene is absolutely badass in the comics…but I think it loses a bit of its cool in the transition to animation. Like with All-Star Superman, the book was definitely better. However, I like the animation, I’m cool with Batman’s voice and I’m definitely looking forward to this movie.

It’s just a shame DC won’t make anymore Wonder Woman animated films, or feature characters other than Batman and Superman.

My 6 Favorite Disney Songs

What’s not to love about Disney songs? They’re an entire genre of music all on their own. There’s a reason why Disney became the powerhouse it is, because they make really good movies, at least when it comes to cartoons. Who doesn’t love the marathon awesomeness that was Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas and the Hunchback of Notre Dame in the early to mid-90s? And then Pixar, wow. Is there any greater movie-maker than Pixar these days?

For a fun list idea, I decided to show you all My 6 Favorite Disney Songs. This is Music Week, after all.

Play Mickey, play

Back in Middle School choir, all we sang were Disney songs. The popular ones too. I remember learning the songs to The Lion King specifically. I’m sure we learned some others. Then we’d all stand up on those green metal risers and sing for our parents on show night. It was fun at that age to learn the lyrics to the movie.

Feel free to sing along.

6 Stories That Made Me Cry Like a Little Baby

First of all, I’m a manly man. I don’t cry. Second of all, sometimes crying can’t be helped. I’m a sucker for a really good dramatic scene in a movie or TV show. And sometimes it’s from a book or something else I’ve read. My eyes get watery, there’s a lump in my throat and I’m just awash with emotion. Everybody knows the feeling. It’s fantastic. Writers and other creative sorts know what they’re doing, they know how to put together the right characters, play the absolute perfect music and bring down the house with pure emotion.

Here are 6 tearjerker moments for me. Warning though, there will be several spoilers for the TV shows Lost and Doctor Who, as well as some movies and comics. Anyway, let’s get to it.

The Underpants Gnomes Strike Again!

I wrote before about Superman losing his red underpants in both the new DC reboot and the movie. Basically, I’m not worried. He’ll look the same to me without the little red underpants. They may be icon for superheroes, but mostly so that people can crack easy jokes about the silliness of superheroes. I can’t stand those easy little jokes. Like, “Robin is gay”. Her da der der der!

Not funny anymore. Please be a little creative in your mocking.

Still, I thought I’d update my last post about the Superman costume. I posted some awesome Avengers pictures earlier, so this time check out this new, close-up shot of the Superman movie costume!

Is that some Kryptonite in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

I’m still liking this new costume. It looks a little weird with all the odd accents and lines, but I understand what they’re going for with this. It’s like I said in the Avengers costume post from earlier today. People want realism in their superhero costumes. People want to see zippers and stuff. It lets them know that the costumes are real, that the characters are real and actually had to get dressed rather than just magically appearing in their costumes.

One of my favorite small scenes in the Lord of the Rings trilogy is when Aragorn is getting dressed in the middle of Two Towers, preparing to defend Helm’s Deep. You see him put on every layer of his outfit, from the chainmail to the green tunic we’ve seen him wearing so far. It made his outfit a real thing to me. It showed that this hero is wrapped up in armor and a carefully chosen outfit. The finished product becomes greater and more powerful because of it.

So I’m happy with weird little lines and armor bits on Superman’s costume. Anything to make it seem more real, instead of the spandex gaudiness of the original Superman movies. Not that those movies were bad, but modern audiences want something else.

Farewell, underpants.
