I Am Totally Cool with J.J. Abrams Directing the New Star Wars

It was announced earlier this week that J.J. Abrams would be directing Star Wars Episode VII some day in the near future. If you’re not familiar with the name, Abrams is also the guy behind the recent Star Trek reboot. So one guy is going to be in charge of both the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises.

Who thought that would be a good idea? And how did Abrams get to be so lucky?

That being said, I am totally cool with Abrams directing the next Star Wars. I loved his first Star Trek, I’m bound to like the second one, and I’ve enjoyed the rest of his work, like Cloverfield. So for the geek record, which I know exists, I am totally in favor of seeing what Abrams can do with Star Wars.

Especially if it’s anything like this fan trailer posted online by GcPrOductions.

Now that was impressive.

Paul Giamatti as the Rhino May Be the Greatest Casting of All Time

But then I liked the announcement that Topher Grace would be Venom, so maybe my opinion is just plain dumb.

Seriously though, the Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Giamatti is in talks to play the Rhino in Amazing Spider-Man 2. The guy from Sideways is going to be the freakin’ Rhino! This guy!

Two great tastes that will taste great together

First of all, awesome news that the Rhino is going to be in the sequel. We already knew about Jamie Foxx as Electro, which is cool, but the Rhino too? That’s just as badass, if not more so. I love the Rhino. He’s just so…so…a lot of things, really. He’s a cool villain. Big, brawny and a lot of trouble. I loved the fight scenes in the first Amazing Spider-Man, and I think they could do even bigger and better with the Rhino. So I am totally on board with him as a villain.

It’s the Paul Giamatti part that’s just so weird! Don’t get me wrong, I love Paul Giamatti. But as the Rhino!?

Who in their right mind considered Giamatti for the Rhino?

I could picture Giamatti doing this

How are they even going to do Rhino? Will he be CGI/motion capture like the Hulk in The Avengers? That could work. Maybe he’ll be like the Scorpion King, with Giamatti’s digital face implanted onto a big CGI Rhino. I don’t know. All I do know is that this is either insane casting or brilliant casting.

What do you guys and girls think?

LEGO Superman is Best Superman

Whenever I watch one of these, I get the feeling that I played with my LEGOs entirely wrong as a kid.

I could have been a LEGO animation artist! That could have been my life! Then I would get all the chicks. Tell me right now, female readers of Henchman-4-Hire, that you would not love a man who knows how to use his LEGOs.

How The Hobbit Should Have Ended

The How it Should Have Ended folks are back on top by making a video that actually shows an alternate ending to a movie! Wow! It’s not just a bunch of jokes about the film itself. This video actually shows how The Hobbit should have ended! Magnificent. Though they also can’t resist making the same tired “Why don’t we take the eagles everywhere?” joke.

The answer is simple, people! In the Lord of the Rings, the Fellowship went on foot in order to avoid detection! If they flew on the eagles, Sauron and Sarumon would see them coming from miles away! By going on foot, they remained undetected. Frodo and Sam made it all the way to Mount Doom without armies of orcs being sent after them, right? It’s the same reason Bartleby and Loki walked from Wisconsin to New Jersey in Dogma.

A flock of giant eagles kind of stands out.

My 6 Most Anticipated Comic Book Movies of 2013

Every year, it seems like more and more superhero movies are coming out. Can anyone even remember the cold, bitter years of the 90s, when we didn’t have this glorious glut of comic book films? Those were dark days indeed. But are we reaching some kind of superhero movie zenith? When are we going to reach the peak and then start coming down again? It’s going to happen someday, could it be 2013? Because there are enough superhero and comic book movies coming out this year that I was able to make a list! And can any of them even possibly live up to The Avengers or The Dark Knight trilogy?

Especially considering at least three of the films are almost direct sequels or pseudo-continuations?

Avengers vs. JLA? Maybe someday…

When researching this list, I didn’t even know or remember that half of these films are even coming out this year. I try to stay abreast of such developments, but there are so many superhero movies being made or expected to be made that I just lose track. I can still remember when we marked our calendars to expect the next big comic book movie. Now I’m just going to relax and let them come as they will. I mean, we’re pretty set for new films and sequels for the next two to three years at least. For good or ill. But this year looks like it might have more winners than losers.
