We Might Not See Ant-Man Film Anytime Soon
I’m incredibly torn by the news that director Edgar Wright is going to start production this September on his next film The World’s End. I’m torn because A.) That doesn’t sound like Ant-Man to me. And B.) because it’s the third movie in the unofficial trilogy after Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, two amazingly brilliant movies that are counted among the few movies I’ll pop in the DVD player to watch over and over again. Not very many movies hold up to excessive repeat viewing, but those two definitely do. As do their commentaries!
And according to Deadline, The World’s End will once again be co-written by Simon Pegg, and will also star Pegg and Nick Frost, the stars of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. So the recipe is in place for The World’s End to be another amazingly brilliant film!
Damn your handsomeness, Edgar Wright!
But Wright is supposed to be working on Ant-Man! How does the $207 million opening weekend for The Avengers not light a fire under everyone’s butt to get Ant-Man into production? If you can’t tell, I’m very excited about Ant-Man.
Anyway, let us not discount the great news that we’re going to get a third film by Wright, Pegg and Frost. The World’s End is expected to be released in 2013. Here’s the description, which sounds pretty epic:
Twenty years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.
My 6 Favorite Moments From The Avengers
So I absolutely loved The Avengers! And I’m confident that anyone reading this blog loved it too. This is a glorious time to be a comic book geek. But let us never under-appreciate the miracle it was to get such a perfect superhero movie. Just think about the time and effort that went into this film: five other big budget Hollywood movies, all of which had to be successful and popular; half a dozen big name actors who were probably far more concerned about their jobs and their craft than in fulfilling our dreams; the cost of those actors’ salaries; finding a director who had a vision that matched our own, and much more.
Had The Avengers been made 10 years ago, it would have been licensed to some other studio like FOX, who would have probably hoped for the best with some crummy one-off movie. Need I remind you what someone thought a Justice League movie should be like in 1997?
Exactly as bad as it looks
Here’s part of the movie on Youtube, if you dare! But could you imagine getting an Avengers movie like that? Shudder to think. Fortunately for us all, Hollywood has recognized that the entire world loves superheroes as much as the rest of us! A $207 million opening weekend? More than $700 million around the world in two weeks? Those numbers are staggering! For an Avengers movie! But those numbers aren’t surprising when you remember how awesome that movie is!

Edgar Wright Knows What We Want
Chalk another one up to my random, obscure pop culture blog changing the world, but no sooner do I mention I want to see Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man movie than he tweets this picture:
That was Tweeted Saturday morning, so right in the middle of The Avengers making their $200 million+ opening weekend. Is it possible that Edgar Wright is starting to realize that he could be a part of that? That everybody wants to see his Ant-Man film, and that I’m not the only one who wants his Ant-Man to be in Avengers 2?
Stop teasing us, Edgar! Make that movie!
Review: Ultimate Comics: All-New Spider-Man #10
For an issue that’s almost entirely talking heads, writer Brian Michael Bendis knocks it out of the park. But that shouldn’t come as a surprise. Bendis is a master of dialogue, and of crafting characters and conflicts through that dialogue. He does more for Ultimate Prowler in this one issue than he’s done in the entire series so far. And star Miles Morales has some fantastic moments as well, making decisions that will define him as a superhero and provide fascinating stories for us readers.

Bendis is basically writing a Masters Course on superhero comics with this series.
Comic rating: 5/5: Great.
Seriously, this issue is almost entirely talking. It’s a chat between Miles and his Uncle Aaron, only now they are both dressed in their respective superhero/villain costumes, and standing on a rooftop. The oddness of such an exchange is not lost on the characters either. But rather than let the 13-year-old Miles get bowled over by his adult uncle, Miles holds his own in the exchange, revealing true growth for the kid. He’s finally no longer beating up losers like Omega Red or the Ringer. It’s time for Miles to get a dose of the real world, courtesy of someone he thought he respected and idolized.
Uncle Aaron, meanwhile, reveals several new layers to his character during this rooftop chat. He’s not just some scumbag super-villain. He’s a thief, and he’s a smart thief. And he also, to some extent, has an eye out for his nephew. So even though he wants Miles’ help with nefarious things, and even threatens to blackmail the kid, Aaron still wants the best for the boy.
That’s some fascinating character work in what is another great issue of the Miles Morales saga.
