An Incredibly Biased Review of Mimic and the X-Men #2

And lo, the skies parted and the light shone down upon us as the world was gifted with the greatest comic book of all time this week. An event nearly 50 years in the making rode into our lives on a tsunami of awesome and fansanity! For here is an issue that has made my years of being a comic book geek and scouring the back issue bins worth it. Your favorite superhero and mine, the Mimic, has thrown down the gauntlet of mediocrity and declared in one voice that he would not go quiet into the night!

How did Mimic not even make the cover?

The X-Men will never be the same. And we are all blessed for it.

Comic rating: INFINITY/5: Scrumtrulescent!!

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a perfect issue. We spend an inordinate amount of time focused on characters who aren’t Mimic. I don’t know what writer Christos Gage was thinking, but considering the badassery of his treatment of Mimic in this issue, he’s easily forgiven. But there’s a lot to slog through. The comic is called Mimic and the X-Men, after all. I suppose he had to squeeze a few other X-Men in there. Otherwise, what would Mimic have to joi…oop! I don’t want to spoil anything in this opening blurb. That would take away everyone’s fun!

And there is nothing more fun than reading the greatest comic book ever published starring the coolest, most underused superhero to ever grace our eyeballs!

Join me for the glory of the word after the jump, if you can contain your excitement. We’re in for one hell of a ride!

There’s a Black Nick Fury?

Well there is now!

In what has to be one of the silliest, most ham-fisted attempts to force the Marvel comics universe to look like the Marvel movie universe, the company is doing away with the classic Nick Fury and has invented, out of the ether, a brand new Nick Fury that looks exactly like the one appearing in next week’s The Avengers movie. He’s got the eye patch, he’s got the goatee, and most importantly, he’s black. They even came up with an insane, soap opera-esque way that he can be called ‘Nick Fury’.

Meet Nick Fury Jr., the long lost son of the normal Nick Fury, who just happens to bear a striking resemblance to Samuel L. Jackson.

He’s also wearing Captain America’s hand-me-downs

It boggles the mind that Marvel would be this desperate to try and get fans of the movies to pick up the comics. Haven’t sales shown that this doesn’t work? There is no huge increase in comic sales correlating with big budget movie releases. The crossover in sales just doesn’t happen!

But Marvel doesn’t seem to care. They’re more than willing to throw continuity and common sense in the garbage if it means even a tiny bit more brand awareness. I hate when executives get their hands on the creative properties.

Join me after the jump for a bit more explanation.

The Answer to Whether or Not Mimic Died Today

Holy crap! Holy crap! Holy crap! Today is an exciting day to be a comic book geek. If you saw my blog on Sunday, you no doubt read the article wondering whether or not one of my favorite comic book characters, the Mimic, was due to die today in X-Men: Legacy #265.

Well this is my reaction after reading the issue:

Spoilers after the jump!

My Blog Exists to Spread Videos Like This One

If my blog wasn’t meant to share videos of The Avengers trailer reshot using their action figures, then I just don’t know what I’m doing anymore. Fortunately, this video exists, and I’m sharing it. I love how they used the Thor-buster Iron Man figure for his fight with Thor, and I love the use of the multiple Iron Man figurines throughout. Not to mention the cameos that we all wish could actually happen in the movie. Hats off to Pitch Films.

Less than two weeks until the film comes out, people!!

Is Mimic Going to Die Next Week?

I sure hope one of my favorite comic book characters isn’t going to die next week, but it’s not looking good. If you recall my epic review from a few weeks ago, the Mimic is currently guest starring in a two issue story in X-Men: Legacy. It’s one of those auxiliary X-Men titles; not one of the main franchise leading titles. It’s almost specifically set up to star the B and C-list X-characters, because they all have fans and slapping ‘X’ onto a comic really helps it sell.

And since I’m a huge fan of the Mimic, I was overjoyed at his appearance! But I’m also afraid that it’s going to end badly!

Handsome sumbitch, ain't he?

So why do I think he’s going to die? Join me after the jump for the disturbing evidence!
