The 6 Best Easter Eggs in Batman: Arkham City

I love video game Easter Eggs, and Batman: Arkham City is littered with them! For anyone who doesn’t know, an Easter Egg is an in-joke or a wink to the fans that game developers put into their game for the sheer fun of it. Like finding He-Man in World of Warcraft, the beating heart in the Statue of Liberty in Grand Theft Auto IV or being able to play as Bill Clinton in NBA Jam. They don’t have anything to do with the main game; but if you’re a fan of the series, and you get the ‘joke’, they can bring a smile to your face. They are a real treat.

Arkham City up close and personal

And when creating the ultimate set of Batman video games, the makers of Batman: Arkham Asylum and the new Batman: Arkham City went Easter Egg crazy!

The story of Arkham City (which I won’t spoil here), is an epic adventure that pits Batman against the Joker and Professor Hugo Strange. The game has Batman facing off against other classic rogues like Two-Face, Catwoman, Penguin, Mad Hatter and more as he tries to solve the mystery of Arkham City and save the day! The game takes place in a sprawling map of Gotham City, featuring such notable levels as Penguin’s Iceberg Lounge, the Gotham City Police Station and Ace Chemicals, where the Joker received his vicious grin.

But hidden in the nooks and crannies of the game, far off the beaten path, are tons of Easter Eggs and references to other characters, villains and stories from Batman lore.

It was like that in the first game too. I loved walking around Arkham Asylum and randomly stumbling across Two-Face’s or Mr. Freeze’s cells. They were just there as part of a normal cell block, the way any prisoner’s cell would be. Well Batman: Arkham City has much more room to work with and a lot more ways to hide Easter Eggs. I won’t be spoiling the main story in this list, just a few of the fun and funny Easter Eggs that you can find hidden in the game.

6 Great Things About Comic Book Conventions

This weekend I’ll be going to the New York City Comic-Con, the biggest comic book convention on the East Coast! I went last year, and it was awesome. This year I’m going with my brother and robot enthusiast Cip (or Professor Robot). I plan on seeing more, doing more and meeting more people this year. So stay tuned to this blog to see all the pictures and read about the adventures I’ll be having at the Comic-Con.

There are a lot of people at comic book conventions

But to tide you over, here are 6 Great Things About Comic Book Conventions, that I know from my own adventures.

The 6 Geekiest Things I Own

This may not come as a big surprise to some people, but I am a huge dork. The condition was really bad in high school, seemed to mellow slightly in college and has now settled into a nice, acceptable level of being a geek. And I’m happy with that. I’ve made my peace with my awkward, dorky state of mind, and an adulthood that’s heavily influenced by video games and Spider-Man. This life clearly doesn’t appeal to everybody, but damned if I’m not loving it. So this list will be a celebration of my geekitude.

And you will never find a more wretched hive of nerd and geekery than my apartment.

No, it's not that bad, and has less Chewbacca

That is to say, my apartment in Rome, New York is filled with all manner of geeky artifacts and memorabilia. Some of it has been collected over the years, and some items were spontaneous purchases that I couldn’t pass up. I’ve got a lot of the items on display just for the sheer geeky thrill of it. I love every scrap of nerdy crap and I thought it would be funny to share The 6 Geekiest Things I Own with everybody.

And yes, I don’t get many female visitors to my apartment. The place could probably use a woman’s touch.

My 6 Favorite Alternate Versions of Superheroes

This is going to be a very geeky list. We’re talking the height of comic book geekery. Maybe some of your non-geeks will learn something. This will hopefully be a silly list too, celebrating the depths of comic book awesomeness. Is everybody familiar with alternate realities? The idea that somewhere out there in existence is an alternate Earth, with alternate versions of us living alternate lives? Well superhero comics love this concept. There are dozens of alternate realities in comics, hundreds even. It’s a favorite of comic writers and fans to create alternate reality versions of famous superheroes.

Like Calvin and Hobbes as Batman and Robin, for example

My 6 Favorite Disney Songs

What’s not to love about Disney songs? They’re an entire genre of music all on their own. There’s a reason why Disney became the powerhouse it is, because they make really good movies, at least when it comes to cartoons. Who doesn’t love the marathon awesomeness that was Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas and the Hunchback of Notre Dame in the early to mid-90s? And then Pixar, wow. Is there any greater movie-maker than Pixar these days?

For a fun list idea, I decided to show you all My 6 Favorite Disney Songs. This is Music Week, after all.

Play Mickey, play

Back in Middle School choir, all we sang were Disney songs. The popular ones too. I remember learning the songs to The Lion King specifically. I’m sure we learned some others. Then we’d all stand up on those green metal risers and sing for our parents on show night. It was fun at that age to learn the lyrics to the movie.

Feel free to sing along.
