6 Best Animated Robins

Batman and Robin are like a rock concert. Batman is this brilliant, blazing, glorious rock star, the idolized hero of millions who burns brighter and rocks harder than anyone else ever will. All the other superheroes, like Superman or Wonder Woman, they’re competing rock stars. Maybe they’ll do an album together or hang out at a charity together, but in the end they have their own bands and their own concerts. Batman views them as rivals. But Robin is unique among other superheroes.

Robin is the guy with the backstage pass.

Animated Batman Lego series anyone?

If Batman is arguably the greatest, most popular superhero, Robin is the fan who Batman lets hang out back stage. We can’t be our favorite rock star. We can’t be Batman. But in some ways, we can be like Robin. We can be the fan with the backstage pass. We can hang out with Batman and learn all of his secrets. We’ll be there for Batman when he’s in a tough spot, or we’ll be by his side when he’s kicking ass. We can be the fan that Batman actually likes hanging out with, the one he shares a beer with. And maybe someday, when Batman needs us the most, he’ll invite us on stage to jam with him.

And then we will prove that it has all be worth it, and we will rock hard enough to impress Batman.

I think that nicely sums up one of the reasons why I like Robin. He’s the guy that Batman trusts above all others, the one that Batman likes hanging out with. The one superhero who is truly in Batman’s inner circle. But Robin is not just ‘Batman’s Pal’, he’s Batman-in-training. He’s Batman’s assistant. That’s what it means to be his sidekick. I plan on doing a lot more with Robin on this blog, but for now let’s take a look at one enterprise that seems to do Robin right: animation.

Here are the top 6 animated Robins, ranked worst to best!

Top 6 Current Superhero Relationships

Romance is dead in comic books. And I’m not just talking about the lack of actual ‘romance’ comics, like they had in the mid-20th century. I mean the classic, long-standing, popular romances that used to define comics are long gone! Through reboots, retcons, death or simple break-ups, the classic couples are no more — especially the ones that were highlighted in the most recent comic book movies.

But don’t worry, all hope is not lost! Newer couples, with a few remaining classics, are proving that even superheroes can still fall in love.

The DC Comics New 52 reboot basically took a scythe to romance in comics. On the chopping block: Superman and Lois Lane, the Flash and Iris Allen, Nightwing and  Batgirl, Nightwing and Starfire, the Joker and Harley Quinn, Green Arrow and Black Canary, Apollo and Midnighter, and many more. Longtime Marvel couples are also kaput. Spider-Man and Mary Jane, Jean Grey and Cyclops, Jean Grey and Wolveirne, Hulk and Betty Ross, Thor and Jane Foster, Rogue and Gambit, Shadowcat and Colossus; the list goes on. Heck, some of the comic book movie relationships, like Iron Man and Pepper Potts, don’t even really exist in the comics. Batman’s ‘true love’, Rachel Dawes, only exists in the Chris Nolan movies.

Fortunately, romance always makes for good drama, so there are still some superheroes shacking up and knocking boots. In honor of Valentine’s Day, here  are the Top 6 Current Superhero Relationships in comics.

6 Superheroes Put on Trial

As is usually the case with my life, I put everything in the context of comic books. My two weeks covering a murder trial for my day job is no different, so I thought about comic books in the courtroom. Not actually reading comic books in the physical courtroom (though that would be fun!), I mean when comic book writers put their heroes and villains on trial. The whole point of superhero comics is fighting crime, right? So you’d think that, in theory, all of these super-villains eventually have to appear before a judge, right?

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. And sometimes, it’s the superheroes who are put on trial!

I sense prejudice on the bench

So I scoured the Internet and the world of comics to find 6 cases when a superhero was forced to face the judicial system as part of a story. I mean an actual, normal courtroom with a judge, a jury and everything! And not those weird cosmic trials, like when Reed Richards went to Universe Court for the genocide of the Skrulls, and Galactus was called as a witness. That’s just crazy. Here are 6 cases when heroes were put on trial for their crimes!

6 Licensed Properties That Need Lego Love

I love Legos! They were one of my favorite toys when I was a kid, and I still have a Lego Batmobile and Lego TIE interceptor on display on my Geek Wall. The fun of building whatever your imagination can think up never gets old. From giant handheld swords to small, intricate castles and spaceships. I grew up in the Silver Age of Legos, when the big sets were pirates, castle, space and modern day. I can still remember the excitement of the Wolf Pack bandits, the Ice Planet spacemen and the introduction of the undersea play sets. I also owned the time machine, which was basically just throwing all the sets together into one toy.

But nowadays the most popular Lego playsets are all licensed properties, like Star Wars, Batman, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean and more!

Lego of the Ring

And I think it’s brilliant! I would have killed to have these kinds of Legos when I was a kid. Instead of making my own crappy Batmobile out of green and red pieces, I could have had a real, well-made Batmobile complete with little Batman and Robin figurines. Or Lex Luthor in his battlesuit fighting an actual licensed Superman and Wonder Woman! Instead of random space people in their little helmets and jetpacks, I could have had Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon!

This year, Lego is coming out with sets for Lord of the Rings, the Avengers, the X-Men and more. So the licensed property train is not stopping. Here are 6 properties out there that need some Lego love!

6 of My Own Creative Ideas

X-Factor-scribe Peter David once wrote, “One doesn’t decide to become a writer and then go scavenging for ideas. One becomes a writer because the ideas keep coming to you, whether you want them or not. It’s just how your mind is wired.”

And for me, that’s exactly what it’s like to be a creative writer.

Now if only I could find somebody to pay me for my ideas. It’s no secret that I want to be a professional writer someday. I have so many ideas for stories, characters, moments, dialogue and more that it would be a crime against humanity for me to never get discovered. Or it would be a crime against me, at least. But making it big in the world of comic books or novels is just as difficult as becoming a movie star. It doesn’t help that most of my writing these days is just recreational, that I haven’t completed a novel or a script or anything else I can shop around.

If I didn’t have a day job, I’d definitely be a starving artist.

For my 300th blog post, I’ve decided to give my readers a peek behind the curtain that is my mind. What are these stories that I’m so excited about? What wild ideas do I hope to bank my future on? What were the tales I doodled into my notebook in middle school? I’m not going to tell you every single story I’m working on – and definitely not the super important ones I hope to publish someday – but here are 6 different ideas I’ve had and cultivated over the years. Some of them are from my childhood, and only ever existed in my fevered mind. Some are actually stories I’ve written and published online, and you can read for yourself if you’re so interested.

Some are wholly original, and some are based around my favorite movies and video games from pop culture. I hope you enjoy the visit.
