Brace Yourselves for a Superman Trailer!

We knew this Superman trailer was coming today, but I was not prepared for just how much juice is in this trailer — without really giving anything away. We still don’t know the overall story or how all these various elements connect or what. We just got a big, juicy, meaty trailer full of all sorts of goodness!

Man, so much going on. Superman. Clark. Lois. Ma and Pa Kent. Krypto. Villains. Lex Luthor. War. Monsters. Justice Gang. Green Lantern. Just so much stuff! Metamorpho! And I think my favorite part is when that ordinary dude climbs down into the crater and helps Superman to his feet. I loved that little bit!

This movie looks amazing and I can’t wait to watch! James Gunn forever!

Superman comes to theaters on July 11.

About Sean Ian Mills

Hello, this is Sean, the Henchman-4-Hire! By day I am a mild-mannered newspaper reporter in Central New York, and by the rest of the day I'm a pretty big geek when it comes to video games, comic books, movies, cartoons and more.

  1. Is it just me or does the plot resemble Captain America Civil War? Boy Scout hero called out for violating another nation’s sovereignty? This creates questions of limits of superhero powers. In one way, it makes sense because Cap and Supes are moral center known for doing what is right. On the other hand it is retreading old ground and Cap feeling bad is ok. He is a man out of time, who has seen Hydra corrupt SHIELD. But Supes whining about not being able to do what he wants when he wants comes across as almost a bully whining for not getting his way.

Also not a fan of seeing skyscrapers fall over. Don’t tell me there were no innocent civilians killed. Crowded cities don’t become uncrowded that quickly. Killed innocent civilians also a thing in Civil War.

So I have concerns. The older I get the more I appreciate Donner’s threading the needle with his Superman. Just fantastic enough to be fun and watchable, while also being believable enough yet we don’t question why Supes doesn’t cure cancer.

Donner made the Supes movies fun while also keeping it not as campy as Batman 1966. A tough row to hoe.

I have doubts, but I could be wrong.

    • We don’t yet know the plot. The thing with the sovereign nation could just be, like, the opening scene for all we know yet. Or I could be wrong. And I don’t take it as Superman whining about not being able to do what he wants when he wants, he’s pushing back against the idea that doing good can be stopped by red tape.

Like, let’s say you’re in school and you intervene when a bully is picking on a kid, but then you also get detention for fighting. What you did was selfless and good, but school rules say you also get detention. That would be god damned frustrating! That’s my take on that situation.

And, of course, I could also be wrong. But I have absolute faith in James Gunn to knock this out of the park!

  2. We’re having a conversation, cool. The bully at school thing actually happened to me. I was terrified I would get into trouble for breaking up a fight and getting hit for my efforts. The principal congratulated me and scolded the other kid, but other than that nothing happened to him. He was not friendly to me for the rest of the year, so even positive actions have negative consequences. Simply put, no good deed goes unpunished.

Gunn is opening a can of worms, and my fear is the issue will only be half explored or it will suck all the fun out of the movie. Superman, in my mind at least, works in a more child friendly world. Going Dark Knight Returns doesn’t work for me when it comes to Superman. It looks like Gunn is trying to split the difference and like I said a tough needle to thread.

Whenever DC reboots, there is a picture of Superman weeping to show how serious the situation is. I am not a big fan of golden and silver age Superman stories. But say what you will, they show being Superman is fun as evidenced by Clark winking to the audience. Dour Superman just makes him look whiny for having all these cool powers. That may work for Spider-Man but it is inelegant for Clark. So I have questions.

The movie will answer my questions. I don’t want to be the guy who forms an opinion before the film comes out. My concerns about Heath ledger and First Avenger have taught me not to prejudge. My concerns could be about bad promotion and not bad movie. July is right around the corner, I can wait.
