6 Cartoon Reboots Where I Want to See the Children As Adults
Legacy sequels are all the rage these days, especially in the movies. I’m lukewarm on this sort of thing, but there was a unique idea floating through some of these sequels that got me thinking: a legacy sequel where the child characters are all grown up! Now that I’d like to see…in some occasions.
This idea found its way into my brain when I read about the new King of the Hill legacy sequel coming out one of these days. Rather than just bring back the show as-is, the new reboot is indeed going to jump ahead to the present day as if the characters aged in real time. So Bobby Hill, in all his childhood glory, is going to be an adult man in the new series. He’s going to have a job. Maybe a family? I don’t want to spoil anything that I read, but it did give me the idea for this List of Six.
So join me after the jump for six shows/movies that starred child characters, and now they’re rebooted into grown ups for continuing adventures. And all of my ideas were for cartoons, so let’s stick to that for now. And feel free to share some of your own in the comments below!
6. Avatar: The Last Airbender
Avatar: The Last Airbender famously already has a legacy sequel, starring Korra. And while it’s probably not as good as the original, it’s still fine and has its own world to play around in. And in The Legend of Korra, we get the occasional glimpse of the adult versions of the Aang Gang. But that’s not enough for me! I want full-on adventures of Aang, Katara, Sokka and all the rest as adults. What sort of trouble did they get up to? How did they do hero stuff while raising kids? Surely they faced some grave dangers, while doing a ton of community building. With all the different reboots and remakes they’re doing with Avatar, why not give us something new instead of retreading old ground?
5. Rugrats
The Rugrats famously already has a legacy sequel called All Grown Up, showing the babies as teenagers in high school. So why not just continue that trend? I realize the appeal is in the show being about babies, which is why it got a recent reboot of them as babies. But why not do a legacy sequel where Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Angelica and the gang are full on grown ups with babies of their own? Where Stu and Didi get to be the grandparents? Think of how interesting this would be. We’d have three different cartoons showcasing the lives of these characters from infants to teens to adults. Has that ever been done before?
4. DuckTales
Let’s age up Huey, Dewey and Louie and see what happens. They’ve been kids long enough. Throw in Webby and Donald, and a still alive Uncle Scrooge, and then a bunch of brand new kids, and we could have something fun. These kids have always had a special place in my heart after I grew up with a Louie plushie as a kid. That was my go-to stuffed animal. And I loved both the original and reboot DuckTales cartoons. So let’s do a new one where they’re grown up! The latest revival featured some grown up versions of other Disney Afternoon cartoons, like Kit Cloudkicker from TaleSpin. So let’s do that for the triplets.
3. Kim Possible
Did the Kim Possible show ever explain why she was a teenage spy? Her parents weren’t spies. How’d she get into the business? Was it just on her own? Now that I think about it (and Google it), they did go into her origins in the show. Excellent. So how about we continue her storyline into adulthood? And, again, possibly with kids of her own. Kim, Ron and Wade can all be adults with interesting lives, still doing the spy thing, but maybe so much more? Maybe they have normal jobs and get brought back into the spy game for some reason? Maybe they’re divorced? I think it could be fun to check back in with that whole lot!
2. Steven Universe
When I was watching the final episodes of Steven Universe (and its sequel spin-off), one thing I really wanted to see was Steven and his friends all grown up. There was just something about the show that was begging to follow Steven’s journey further along, to see him become an adult and fully embrace his powers and responsibilities. To maybe have some kind of future with his “friend” Connie. And I would love to see that show. I’d love to see a young adult, superhero Steven, maybe off to college, using his shield and whatnot to make the world a better place, with his cool girlfriend Connie at this side. The Crystal Gems, of course, don’t age, so they’d still be around. I think it would be super keen!
1. The Incredibles
So this is the entry that inspired this list. I was home visiting my parents and we randomly turned on the second half of The Incredibles on TV (they are subscribed to Disney+) and the movie definitely held up. And it sparked a long held belief of mine: grown up Incredibles would be awesome! Dash, Violet and Jack Jack as young adult superheroes, just like their parents had been? That would be awesome! Do they stay a team together? Do they branch off to become their own superheroes? Do they get codenames? What’s Jack Jack like when he’s got all of those powers and isn’t a baby? And then the Parrs get to be senior citizens, maybe even new grandparents?! This would be a great Incredibles threequel!
