6 Potential Superhero Super Bowl Half Time Shows
It’s Super Bowl week! The Big Game is this weekend between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers! I have no dog in the race — I’m a Cincinnati Bengals fan — and I’m not going to watch anything but the commercials on YouTube. But I can definitely make a Super Bowl-themed List of Six this week!
I’ve already done sports-themed superheroes. I even did a list of comic characters that Taylor Swift should date! This time I’m going to do comic book characters who could put on a good Half Time Show! There are a couple of musical-based characters, or even superheroes who are rockstars. Honestly, I’d love to see more comics where super-powered characters have jobs other than superhero. I think it would be neat!
Join me after the jump for six musical comic book characters who could put on a pretty good Super Bowl Half Time Show!
6. DJ
DJ was one of the new students introduced in that big wave of new X-Men students alongside the likes of Hellion and Wind Dancer. He’s got the power to manifest different powers, like force fields or flight, depending on the different types of music he hears. So the dude could perform a whole medley of songs and put on all sorts of super-powered spectacles for the audience. I’m sure we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg for his powers, because minor characters like him don’t get a lot of exploration.
5. Rhapsody
Rhapsody is a personal favorite character of mine! She first appeared in a single X-Factor storyline in the early 90s, a random mutant school teacher with the power to use music to warp people’s minds, emotions and perceptions. She got in trouble for murder and went to prison, but after 30 or so years, finally reappeared on Krakoa recently. She’s a celebrated cellist on the island and could be a big star! Her Super Bowl show could really enrapture the whole audience with her powers.
4. Pied Piper
This DC villain does exactly what his name implies: he’s got a hypnotic flute that can control people’s minds when he plays. I’m not above fully manipulating the audience when it comes to a Half Time Show. So put that guy on the field, amplify his flute and then have the whole audience go rob a bank or something. Now that would be a halftime show to remember!
3. Lila Cheney
Lila Cheney is such a fun and weird character. She doesn’t have music-based super-powers, but is still a mutant within the X-Men family of comics. She has the power of long-distance teleportation. Unlike Nightcrawler, who teleports nearby, Lila teleports across light years. So she went into space and then, somehow, became an intergalactic rock star! Because heck yeah! She’s one of the most popular rock bands in the entire galaxy, and I think any Super Bowl would be chuffed to book her as a performance. You’d get the entire galaxy tuning in to the broadcast, which has gone to raise advertising rates!
2. Black Canary
Black Canary is a prominent member of the Justice League of America and a superhero with a sonic scream power. She also headlines a band of the same name, or at least she has in the past. I don’t know the current canon status of the Black Canary band, but they exist and she could totally put on a great show at the Super Bowl. Wouldn’t even need a microphone and everybody could hear her!
1. Dazzler
What more needs to be said about Dazzler? She should be a household name. The original mutant superhero rockstar. She’s been rocking out since the Disco era, always reinvented, always bringing the music and the showmanship. I’m surprised there’s never been an in-canon story in which Dazzler performs for the Marvel Universe Super Bowl. She’s a mutant with the power to turn sound into light, and puts on some amazing light shows with her music. That’s got Half Time written all over it. Dazzler is super underrated and I legit want more Dazzler comics!
