6 Obscure DC Characters I Want to See in James Gunn’s New DCU
James Gunn and Warner Bros. are full speed ahead on their relaunch of the DC Cinematic Universe, and I’m all for it. I might be a Marvel Zombie through and through, but I love all comic book companies equally. Plus I really love James Gunn’s superhero movies. He makes hugely entertaining movies, and I can’t wait to see what he’s cooking up.
Gunn announced the casting of Milly Alcock this weekend as the new Supergirl. He’s also announced characters like Metamorpho, Hawkgirl and the Creature Commandoes as showing up. And considering the obscure nobodies he put into his Suicide Squad movie, I think it’s fair to say that Gunn likes obscure characters. I also like obscure characters! So I’ve put together a list of obscure DC heroes and villains I’d like to see somewhere in the new DCU. I don’t care where, and I don’t care who plays them; I just want to see these awesome people show up somewhere!
Join me after the jump for the six obscure DC characters I’d love to see on the big (or small!) screen in the new DCU. And feel free to share your own characters in the comments below!
6. Rankorr
I love the Emotional Light Spectrum in the Green Lantern mythos. Geoff Johns created whole bunch of new layers to the galaxy, bringing in all sorts of new Lantern Corps. I would love for the whole concept to be introduced in the upcoming Green Lanterns TV show. Maybe from the beginning, or maybe as a reveal for future seasons. I want a bunch of them to appear, but I’ll single out Rankorr, the Red Lantern from Earth. Despite all those different colored corps, very few humans got an extra ring, despite all the human GLs. I think the show could establish the human John Moore on Earth early on and then surprise the audiences down the road with him becoming a Red Lantern. Could be awesome!
5. Animal Man
I recently finished reading the original Animal Man Grant Morrison comic from the late 1980s, and it lived up to all the hype and attention it’s received over the years. I had no idea how far and how deep it would go, but it really went there, and awesome for that! So I’m definitely in an Animal Man mood, and would be thrilled if we got to make an appearance somewhere in the big DCU. He’s a neat guy, and that’s a neat story! Imagine if all of that got adapted into a TV show. She-Hulk sort of already did that thing, but a big adaptation of Morrison’s Animal Man would go even bigger!
4. Wonder Twins
I love the Wonder Twins, they’re awesome. They’re nostalgic, and just plain neat. And the recent comic book series positioned them as interns at the Hall of Justice. That’s a great role for them. If the Justice League already exists in this universe — and it sounds like it kinda, sorta does — then having the Wonder Twins around in the background would be a hoot. People love the Wonder Twins and would recognize them instantly. Get people on board with fast nostalgia!
3. Fire and Ice
Fire and Ice are a great pair, a great visual, and some solid female characters to bring into the world. Fire’s green fire thing is so darn cool! I’m shocked that it doens’t get used more often. Fire powers are cool, and green fire powers are even cooler. Simple as that, easy peasy. Here’s two female characters with easy to understand and visually cool powers, and they’re best pals, so that’s fun too. Hawkgirl needs some girlfriends, right?
2. Plastic Man
Plastic Man is a wild and crazy character who deserves the live action treatment, and would make for a great side character somewhere. He’s weird, he’s funny, he’s quite zany, and he doesn’t more with stretching and shapeshifting powers than even Mr. Fantastic. Find a funny actor who can really bring him to life, and Plas would be a blast! He doesn’t need his own movie or show, but he’d be a hoot as a supporting character somewhere.
1. Larfleeze
Rankorr and the Red Lanterns would be cool and all, but I gotta see Larfleeze, the Orange Lantern, in that TV show at some point. Larfleeze is the sole wielder of the Orange light of greed, because he’s so greedy. He has all of the power of an entire Corps in him, and creates constructs of dead beings to serve his avarice. He’s vile, vicious and sometimes even comical, so he’d be a pretty awesome, powerful and weird being to put in a TV show. He’s already been in the Green Lantern cartoon from years ago. Put this monster in live action!
