6 Things I Want to See in Beyond the Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is out on digital download and whatever else people use to watch movies at home these days. It’s one of the best movies of the year, and a hugely awesome experience. I loved the movie, as if that was in question. And I’m very much looking forward to the announced sequel: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Sadly, the plan to release Beyond the Spider-Verse next year probably isn’t going to happen. I thought they were making these two movies back-to-back, but I guess that’s not the case, and work has barely begun on the threequel. Oh well. I’m a patient man, and I’ll see it when I see it. I once did a list of what I wanted to see in Across the Spider-Verse, and some of it actually came true! So if I do this list of what I want to see in Beyond, maybe some of those will come true as well.
Join me after the jump for six things I hope to see in the threequel/trilogy conclusion. And feel free to share your own hopes and dreams in the comments below!
6. Some alternate Peters

You know one thing that I didn’t realize until long after the fact? There aren’t a lot of alternate Peter Parkers in Across the Spider-Verse. With the exception of Peter B. Parker, none of the main alternate Spider-people are a version of Peter Parker. We’ve got Miguel O’Hara, Gwen Stacy, Hobie Brown, Jessica Drew, Ben Reilly, Margo Kess and, of course, Miles Morales. Almost as if Peter Parker isn’t meant to be the only Spider-Person. But why not have some more alternate Peters? Why not have Peter B. Parker have to interact with alternate versions of himself? That would be funny and neat. And hopefully not too confusing.
5. Miguel O’Hara redemption
Miguel O’Hara is a great antagonist in Across the Spider-Verse, but is he a villain? Is he a bad guy? I don’t think he’s outright evil. He’s coming from a place where he thinks he’s helping. And he put together the whole Spider-Peoples Party. So I would like to see a redemption arc for him in the next movie. Don’t make him the all-encompassing big bad guy at the end. Have him either see the error of his ways or figure out a better way to do things, or to better understand how the Spider-Verse itself works. The dude should get his due.
4. Hobie Brown Prowler acknowledgement
Hobie Brown, Spider-Punk, really stole the show in Across the Spider-Verse. Someone literally said, “I like Hobie” during the theater screening I saw of the film. He’s cool as hell. But surely I’m not the only person in the world who cares that Hobie Brown was the original Prowler in the comics. This gets really, really complicated. So Hobie Brown started out as the Prowler, and was the Prowler in the comics for several decades. Then Miles Morales came along in the Ultimate Universe, and Ultimate Prowler was changed to be Miles’s Uncle Aaron. Then Into the Spider-Verse came along and solidified the Prowler as Uncle Aaron in the minds of fans.
Then Spider-Punk came along, and the writer who created him decided to make him Hobie Brown instead of Peter Parker. I don’t know where what decision came from. And now Hobie Brown shows up in Across the Spider-Verse and is solidified as Spider-Punk to fans. But what about Hobie Brown as the Prowler? All those decades of history just wiped out because this other stuff is more modern? I don’t know how the movie can explore Hobie as the Prowler…but it would be neat if they did somehow.
3. Spot ascendancy
The Spot is one of my all-time favorite comic book characters. I’ve been a fan of his since I was a child, when he appeared on the animated Spider-Man show in the 90s, and then I found out he was such a loveable loser in the comics. He’s just so weird, but with such an awesome power. And Across the Spider-Verse has really raised his profile. I hope Beyond the Spider-Verse raises it even more! I want the Spot to be in the conversation of best Spider-Man villains of all time! This threequel can make him a household name!
2. Alternate Miles
I would like to see a bunch of alternate reality Miles Spider-Manses somehow ride to the rescue in the new movie. As we saw in the spider’s flashback, it was supposed to be a dreadlock-sporting Miles in Universe 42 before it was portaled to the main Miles’s universe, so he’s not a total aberration. And we saw that the Spider-Man from the modern Insomniac games is part of the Spider-Verse, and Miles is definitely a major character in those games. So there are definitely other Miles Morales Spider-Men out there. So let’s see them show up! Lets get them into the mix.
1. Spider-Boy
Somehow, someway, some day, Marvel and DC Comics will bury the hatchet enough to bring back the Amalgam characters. They were just so much fun! And so neat! I would love some Amalgam action figures. And I would especially love Spider-Boy, the cross between Spider-Man and Superboy (90s version of each) to make a cameo appearance in one of these movies. There are so many background Spider-Men! Why not Spider-Boy?! Why not make it happen? Throw us this bone! Get some lawyers to start talking and work this out. Even if I’m the only one who cares.
