Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/15/23

I’m afraid I don’t have much to review this weekend, everybody! It was a very hectic week for me for various reasons, so I didn’t have much time to read a lot of comics. And most of the stuff that came out wasn’t on my list anyway. I’m not interested in DC’s nightmare event, and I wasn’t going to waste time with that Ms. Marvel funeral issue since they’ve already announced her return.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Scarlet Witch #6 because this is still a fun comic, even if it’s the only one I read this week.

Scarlet Witch zappin’ aliens

Meanwhile, I’m getting nearer and nearer the end of Tears of the Kingdom. I’d say getting two months out of a video game is pretty solid! Whereas Diablo 4 I can’t wait to finish, but I also can’t handle too much of that game in one sitting. Oh well. Beyond those two games, not much else going on to talk about nerdwise. Next week is Comic-Con, but I won’t be there, again.

Comic Reviews: Scarlet Witch #6.

New story arc, same good comic.

Ganymede, last surviving warrior of the Archsisterhood, comes through the Last Door after being pursued by the Kree Pursuer Corps. She explains to Wanda that her sisterhood was wiped out while in stasis, and she’s the only one left, and is on a quest for revenge. So Wanda takes her to see Teddy and Billy, who rule the united Kree/Skrull Empire. Ganymede nearly ruins things with her anger, but Wanda and Billy settle things and look into what really happened. Turns out, the Archsisterhood was killed by the Blood Skrulls, who are a Skrull purist sect. So Wanda and Ganymede go and fight them, with Ganymede getting her revenge.

Later, when Wanda returns to her shop, she finds out that Magneto has shown up to help with the Mysterium.

Comic Rating: 8/10 – Very Good.

This issue is a great example of everything good about this Scarlet Witch series. It’s an overall simple, nearly done-in-one story that is full of character and energy. It’s both new and feels tied into the rest of Marvel, with plenty of visits from supporting characters in Wanda’s life. Ganymede is a nifty new character with a strong personality and style, and she works nicely alongside Wanda. So from the get-go, we’ve got a nice story partner to work with. And it was always inevitable that Wanda would meet up with her son and son-in-law, and Orlando came up with a great story to make that happen. Freaky Blood Skrulls and their weird side religion? Nifty! All around fun story with fun characters, both new and old.

Do not take me for some conjurer of cheap crisps!

And the artwork is as strong as ever. Pichelli has been nigh perfect on this series so far, and if a fill-in was needed, then Tammetta worked wonderfully. I couldn’t tell what was fill-in and what wasn’t. The characters and the action are crisp, the emotions are strong, and the colors are as bright and brilliant as ever on this series. I’ve said it before and it bears repeating: Scarlet Witch is a great solo hero series. It’s a bunch of fun little stories with a strong, entertaining protagonist and plenty of connection to the rest of Marvel. That Magneto appearance is especially fun. Man is looking sharp in death.

TL;DR: New story starts and it’s the same great comic as always. Entertaining characters on a quick, complete adventure, with stylish, detailed artwork. The whole package.

The comics I review in my Hench-Sized reviews are just the usual comics I grab from Comixology any given week, along with a few impulse buys I might try on a whim. So if there are any comics or series you’d like me to review each week, let me know in the comments.
