My 6 Favorite Wolverine Costumes

Wolverine is as cool of a comic book character as they get. He’s all piss and vinegar, all claws and fighting. He was the stare of the entire X-Men movie franchise. And in his potential swan song — Deadpool 3 — we’re finally going to see actor Hugh Jackman suit up in a classic, comic book Wolverine costume. No more black leather, no more movie-ending teases; Jackman is suiting up and looking good.

Those claws will always be cool

So with Wolverine’s costume on my mind, I’ve decided to put together a list of my favorite Wolverine costumes from over the decades. I’ve done similar lists for Spider-Man and Batman. And Wolverine has had more than a few costumes to choose from over the years. From simple costume changes to alternate realities to various cartoons, Wolverine has a lot of costumes.

So join me after the jump for my favorites! And feel free to share your own favorite Wolverine costumes in the comments below.

6. Krakoa

Compact

I really like the design Wolverine is sporting nowadays as his go-to Krakoa uniform. I even bought the action figure. It’s a tight, simple, no frills, modern adaptation of one of his classic looks. I like that and I like this look.

5. Alex Ross design

The world is a better place for this

I don’t know if these Alex Ross X-Men designs were ever used in comics, but I had that issue of Wizard magazine back in the day, and they have obviously made an impression on a lot of people. This one is really stylish, while still being clearly Wolverine. I don’t know if it would work on its own, outside of a group of similar costumes. But it’s a neat look, to be sure.

4. Dark Claw

Amalgam revival when?

I will always include Amalgam characters on these lists because I love Amalgam and their character designs are so damn cool. Wolverine crossed with Batman? Dark Claw is so damn cool. And not in a 90s edgelord sort of way. He’s not an edgelord. He’s just a cool combination of Batman and Wolverine, and this is a great look for Wolverine as well.

3. New X-Men

I just like those jackets

I really like it when X-Men costumes match, and are cool looking on top of that. The Avengers and Justice League costumes shouldn’t match. But the X-Men can match, and I really enjoyed this line of black leather and yellow jackets and outfits for Grant Morrison’s New X-Men relaunch, after the movies. I’m glad Wolverine wore a shirt sometimes under his jacket, but the look worked for him quite well.

2. Classic blue and yellow

The cartoon knew what it was doing

Of Wolverine’s two most classical suits, you’ll notice that the classic brown suit isn’t even on this list. It’s true. I’ve never been a fan. I was student of the 90s X-Men cartoon, with the classic blue and yellow. So that’s the classic suit for me. I even sort of like his original costume, with the whiskers. It all works for me. Wolverine in yellow is a damn good look.

1. Astonishing X-Men

Modern yellow and blue

Wolverine in yellow is a damn good look, especially with modern stylings. The 90s cartoon look may be classic, but Marvel did a bang up job updating that look for a modern comic world when the leather jacket look was rebranded into the Astonishing X-Men costume. It’s sleek, it’s simple, it’s pure Wolverine, and it looks both good and classic. This is a great, modern, simple Wolverine style and it’s my favorite, hands down.
