6 Greatest Romantic Missed Opportunities in Comics

I was so excited about The LEGO Movie last week that I totally forgot it was Valentine’s Day! And I had this romantic comic book list all prepared. Welp, fortunately for me, love is an all-year-round sort of thing, and this list works just as good today as it would have last week! It’s a fun bit of speculation game of the top comic book couples I wish would happen. I love a good romance as much as the next person, but for some reason, comic book writers can’t read my mind.

For example: This = Terrible

On the Internet, this sort of thing is known as ‘shipping’. And as much as I enjoy listing my ideal team lineups or what I’d like to see in a potential movie, I’m also a sucker for true love. So here are the top 6 romantic couples in comics that I wish would hook up. And believe me, if I ever get to write comics, these are going to happen.

I’d love to hear some of your romantic ideas in the comments! Please feel free to share.

6. Batman and Wonder Woman

How I want Man of Steel 2 to end

Was there anything more adorable in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon than the simmering relationship between the dark, brooding Batman and the cheerful, confident Wonder Woman? I argue there was not. But DC Comics seems insistent on forcing Wonder Woman to hook up with Superman, the most obvious coupling in the history of fiction! Granted, a serious, long-term relationship with Wonder Woman would kind of mess up Batman’s whole gothic protector thing, but the couple would be much more entertaining and much more relatable than Wondy and Supes. Just sayin’.

(I’m also just saying that Wonder Woman and Orion should totally be a thing. This Wonder Woman/Superman stuff is pure garbage, whereas writer Brian Azzarello has created a truly touching and meaningful friendship between the Amazon and the New God. Sorry, rant over.)

5. Nightcrawler and Storm

He’s a demon in the sack…probably

Both of these X-Men need somebody to love, and after some flirtation in the most recent issue of Amazing X-Men, I think they would be rather steamy together. I wasn’t reading X-Men back in the 70s, what with that whole ‘not being born yet’ thing. But apparently they were friends when they first joined the X-Men together. Well now both of them are going to be on the team with nothing better to do, and not much else going on in their lives. So why not hook’em up? Love could be in the air!

4. Question and Huntress

Danger hugs

The original Question and the Huntress were an item in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon too (and the comics, I think), but I’m talking about the Renee Montoya version of the Question. Before the big New 52 reboot ruined everything, DC (or at least a few cool writers) seemed to be putting these two together as besties. I thought they would have been a really cute couple. Heck, I still think Renee Montoya and Batwoman was a great couple that never got enough attention from DC. What I’m basically saying is, they need to hurry up and bring Renee Montoya back and find her someone to love!

3. Robin and Supergirl or Wonder Girl

Blondes, amiright?

Tim Drake has almost always been a swinging bachelor, even when the world of superhero teenagers is filled with beautiful young ladies…no wait, I didn’t mean it like that! Uh, I just mean, if Batman isn’t going to get with Wonder Woman (or Superman, for that matter), why not write out those relationships using their sidekicks? There was a period in the early 00s when the pair of Tim Drake and Kara Zor-El would have been pretty cute. And what about now in the New 52? Even though Teen Titans is an abomination, I’d still like to see Tim hook up with Wonder Girl. It would be something new and interesting, which is exactly the point of hooking up unexpected couples.

2. Spider-Man and Captain Marvel

She’s already taking several bullets for him

I’ve written about this at length before, but it bears repeating: Spider-Man and Captain Marvel would be an absolutely adorable relationship, if only Marvel would let it happen. Things are a little complicated right now, what with Otto Octavius posing as Peter Parker, but Pete is on his way back to the land of the living in only a few short months, and he’s still a swinging bachelor. As much as I like Otto’s relationship with Anna Maria, there’s no way Peter can just pick up where they left off. He’s got his own lady troubles to deal with, a classic aspect to his story. Well why has Peter never hooked up with any of his fellow superheroes? It might crush his ‘Parker Luck’ angle, but the Marvel Universe is rarely so connected as it is these days, and Peter and Carol make a very cute couple.

1. Beta Ray Bill and Sif

A match made in Asgard

Poor Sif. She’s Asgard’s version of ‘always a bridesmaid, never the bride’, even the movie version of Sif can’t seem to seal the deal with Thor. And in the comics, where Jane Foster isn’t a factor, Sif still can’t seem to get as much as a kiss from big, beefy and blonde. But why should she even bother when there’s a much better match in Beta Ray Bill, Thor’s best pal and oath-brother! The two shared the spotlight in the final story arc of the recent Journey Into Mystery, where writer Kathryn Immonen wrote them as the most adorable ‘will they/won’t they’ in comics! But for some reason, Marvel decided to give Bill a weird, quasi-robotic girlfriend with whom he doesn’t have an ounce of chemistry. I thought for sure Immonen was going to hook up Bill and Sif, but the story ended with Bill going back to his lady friend and Sif going back into obscurity. Will we never live in a society where the love between an Asgardian warrior woman and a half-horse, cyborg, alien badass is acceptable?

About Sean Ian Mills

Hello, this is Sean, the Henchman-4-Hire! By day I am a mild-mannered newspaper reporter in Central New York, and by the rest of the day I'm a pretty big geek when it comes to video games, comic books, movies, cartoons and more.

  1. Well this is a fun list. I don’t think I want to ever be called a “shipper” but I certainly have some couples I think would make for interesting dynamics in comic books. Oh also, I already have a pretty good list of characters who I don’t want to see as couples, with Peter Parker and Carlie Cooper right on top. So be sure to post that list one of these days.

    6. The Young X-Men with anyone but each other. Young Beast and Young Jean was a neat idea, but I’m bored with it already. And I do often feel that these male characters only fell for Jean because she was the only female there. But now there are more young female mutant super heroes than you can shake a stick at. Possibilities are endless. Oh and Young Jean plus Gold Balls ftw.

    5. Cyclops and…nobody. Hear me out. Cyclops was defined by his relationship to Jean Grey for a long time. So much so that it always came up during his relationship with Emma. But I feel like all that is done. He dated Jean, then rebounded with Emma, and now he’s free and clear. He should enjoy single life for a while. Maybe go on a couple random dates on the side. He should have some terrible date with Kitty for a one-shot comic and then realize that they work better as friends. Cyclops is now the greatest character Marvel is writing right now. He doesn’t need a relationship to be awesome.

    4. Emma Frost and anybody. See, I’m still worried that Scott and Emma will get back together. It would go a long way to assuage my fear if Emma got herself some other boyfriend and was genuinely happy with him. Sure there’d be drama and all that, but at some point it would be clear that Cyclops and Emma Frost are done for good. But the guy in question cannot be Namor… or anyone currently on the team. Make it a new mutant. Or make it just some random guy. Or Fantomex, that way I could lump all the characters I dislike together in one couple. Plus Fantomex and Psylocke were going to be on my other list of characters I don’t want together.

    3. Doctor Octopus: the Robot and Anna Maria. I really don’t want the real Peter Parker to come back. We’ve been eating burgers for 50 years, then they start serving us Filet Mignon, and now they want us to go back to burgers. It’s cruel is what it is. And of course Peter can’t date Anna Maria for the same reasons Octo-Spidey couldn’t date Mary Jane. So I don’t know how the switch back will happen, but let’s just assume that they figure out a way for Doc Ock to live as the new Vision somehow. Then he should reveal everything to Anna Maria, who will naturally freak out at first, but then somehow be cool with.

    2. The Shocker and the Beetle. The Superior Foes of Spider-Man has gone to incredible lengths to trick us into thinking that the Shocker is not super awesome. Well they have failed. We already know Shocker is the greatest villain alive in comics today (since I don’t count Cyclops, Magneto, or Octo-Spidey). So when SFoSM tries to make you think Shocker is a middle-aged friend-less loser who pees his pants (like Batman), all I read is the will they/ won’t they tension between him and Beetle. Poor Boomerang had to try and kill him because he got so crazy jelly.

    1. Bug and Mantis. So I have no idea, but I assume after their run in Guardians of the Galaxy, these two have vanished into comic book limbo again. But while on the team, I thought they had amazing chemistry. They would have been awesome together. And while I fully support a GotG with the 5 main characters they have now, losing these two is a big miss. I really want to go re-read those old GotG comics now.

Note: no DC couples were included because love is forbidden within their pages.

  2. My objection to Spider-Man and Captain Marvel is that Peter needs someone normal. He needs someone he can unwind with. He needs MJ. Besides, we all know Carol and Jessica belong together.

For Storm, I don’t want her to have a boyfriend right now. No, what I want is for her to get a solo title, and in that solo title, she works with a trans person and has a mutual attraction with him or her, and her making it clear that gender really doesn’t matter to her. Storm is Marvel’s biggest female character, and their biggest black character – how awesome would it be if she were bisexual, too?

Karma needs a girlfriend. Girl needs some love. I don’t even care who. Just let her get laid, dammit.

Kate and Miss America. We all want it to happen.

Bling and Mercury in X-Men. Triage and Irma in UXM (we all see it).

I really don’t do much shipping. It’s just not in my nature.

    • Carol and Jessica? Maybe, but I see them more as besties. And I agree that Peter having someone normal is great, but for a little while, he could stand to have someone super!

Somebody needs to hook up in Uncanny X-Men. I read today’s issue and was thoroughly disappointed.

      • Today’s issue was great. Lots of fun, and some nice character development for the students.

And yeah, Carol and Jessica are besties for life, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make jokes about them being lovers.

      • I’m going to get more into it in my review on Saturday, but while I really enjoyed the banter and such from the team, I really think it’s time for Bendis to start building up some legitimate drama between these new characters. In this week’s issue, they just felt like a single bantering entity instead of individual voices. I want to see some romances, some friendships and anything else between them instead of just genial getting along.

  3. Cip: I was super shipping a Quentin Quire/Jean Grey connection and there was a glimmer of it when the original X-Men first arrived. That’s obviously not going to be a thing but I still hope for young Cyclops with X23 and Marvel Girl with… older Cyclops.

Xmenxpert: Will you please be my new best friend for shipping Kate/America? They were my favorite non-thing in Young Avengers. Actually, upon reading your entire comment, will you be my new best friend for being amazing?

Sean: I liked the Carol/Pete connection in the early issues of Captain Marvel but I don’t love the idea of Carol being tied to any one male hero, especially one as iconic as Peter Parker. She’s in the shadow of her male counterparts all the time and I think that dating someone in her hero circle would just undermine all the female empowerment she’s so hip to. If she’s gonna be with anyone (male, blech), I would want it to be some normal guy, almost for the same reason my new bestie thinks Peter should be with MJ.
