Ms. Marvel to Return as a Teenage Pakistani Muslim Girl
Marvel Comics announced a new Ms. Marvel today: the teenage shape-shifter Kamala Khan. She will star in her own series starting up next year, exploring the life of a teenage Muslim superhero living in New Jersey. I would like to say we live in a world where this sort of announcement would be beloved by all, but we don’t, but to hell with those people. This is awesome news.
As detailed in an article today in the New York Times, Kamala Khan is a teenage girl growing up in New Jersey who is not only both Muslim and Pakistani, but is also a huge fan of the superheroine Captain Marvel. When Kamala discovers her own super-powers – which include being able to change her shape – Kamala decides to become a hero, and she decides to use Captain Marvel’s old superhero name, Ms. Marvel.
The comic will be written by G. Willow Wilson, herself a convert to Islam, with art by Adrian Alphona. I’m not familiar with either of their work, other than Alphona’s brief run on Runaways. Either way, I’m definitely picking up this series.
“This is not evangelism,” Ms. Wilson said. “It was really important for me to portray Kamala as someone who is struggling with her faith.” The series, Ms. Wilson said, would deal with how familial and religious edicts mesh with super-heroics, which sometimes require rules to be broken.
Sounds good to me! I fully support and look forward to any and all attempts to make a more diverse superhero lineup. Though, of course, it’s not just going to be about growing up as a Muslim-American. Wilson told the Times that she wants to focus on the general experience of growing up a teenager. This one just happens to be Muslim and have super-powers.

I was really excited to hear about this. I think this a fantastic move on Marvel’s part. Giving a solo title to a Muslim character – especially a Muslim girl – is a really positive move. Bravo to Marvel.
It’s just a shame this series is going to have terrible sales. A new character? Who’s also a female? Marvel has bad luck with both of those things. The only chance she really has is if people pick it up specifically because she’s a Muslim. I think Sam Alexander being mixed-race has probably helped the sales of Nova.
You are absolutely right, and it pains me to acknowledge. This series is going to struggle for it’s entire 10 issues, I’m sure. But gosh darnit, I’m gonna buy it! I’m even thinking of adding it to my bigger review rotation since Scarlet Spider is ending shortly before this comic is beginning.
It might still last a couple years. It’ll just have poor sales the entire time. I think how long it lasts will ultimately come down to how much Marvel itself supports it. A book with a lot of internal support can last for a while with poor sales – X-Factor comes to mind. I’m guessing it makes it to 18 issues. We’ll see, I guess. You never know, the audience could actually surprise us, and throw their support behind this book.
I will definitely keep my hopes up.
So one thing Sean,if you know, is this girl supposed to be a mutant, inhuman, metahuman, peter parker wannabee, or does she get her powers from her clothes, or part of an experiment or alien like the original ms. arvel or did she get slammed with powers like the FF. Otherwise that I got know beef with this type of character be her from jersey or Muslim should be interesting as long as she’s not a character to that Alpha prick.
The articles I read didn’t list her origin. I wouldn’t put it past Marvel to make her an Inhuman, considering that’s their big thing going forward into the new year.
I’m excited. Hopefully it’ll be a hit. Possible sleeper hit?
I’m hoping so! Comics need diversity like this.
I predict a ton of cameos from Marvel’s cashcows to boost this book’s sales. As long as “Muslim Heroine” isn’t the point of the series, I might pick this up.
Still, I wish we could have Sooraya Qadir back =/
Cashcow cameos are a classic fixture! Spider-Man or Iron Man’ll probably show up in issue #2.
Technically, Dust is still supposed to be around. So maybe Marvel will crossover their two teenage, female Muslim characters.
