First Trailer for That Batman Cartoon That Replaces Robin with Katana

Right off the bat, Beware the Batman has earned my ire. What sort of show replaces Robin with Katana? Honestly!

Beware the Batman premieres on July 13 on Cartoon Network. Apparently it’s going to be about Bruce and Alfred battling newer foes like Professor Pyg. Also, Katana is going to be Alfred’s god-daughter for some reason, and he hires her on as Bruce Wayne’s bodyguard, because he needs one of those. Or I guess that’s going to be the cover story so that Katana can really train as his sidekick (or Alfred’s replacement).

The animation looks fine. The action looks fine. Beware the Batman looks fine. But I cannot stand this gross violation of something that’s not really that important, now I think about it. It’s not like I’m the target audience for this cartoon. Still, a blogger must have principles, and around here we are pro-Robin.

Also, did you see what I did up top with ‘right off the bat’? Nailed it.

  1. I read in one interview that Katana doesn’t “replace” Robin as much as join the Bat-family, they said that Robin is “still around” and might make an appearance depending on where they are taking the show, who is the Robin in that universe? I don’t know, although if he is “Nightwing” or “Red Robin” by the time it starts that might explain his absence.

    • Ah, so you’re saying that Robin may have already come and gone? Interesting. I had not considered that possibility. This show always sounded like a brand new beginning for Batman.

Regardless, until Robin actually makes an appearance, I have raised my ire. And I do not simply lower my ire for no reason. So good day, sir!

  2. Lower your ire, that’s funny, I’ll have to use that in conversation sometime. I generally think in a Batman-centered TV show that the companion, whether Robin or Katana, should be phased in, a few appearances early in the first season and maybe a storyline integrating them at the end of the first or beginning of the second. I feel that if you have all your characters in set positions then you lose a lot of possible plots. I don’t like Katana as a sidekick, I’d prefer Robin, I could settle for an original character, but I feel that Batman doesn’t just open up his life, the Batcave, etc. to just anyone. If they have it where they meet somewhere and she doesn’t know his identity I could live with it. I just don’t think I could get over the animation, it’s not really bad per se, but it doesn’t work at all for Batman, I’m not sure if I want to laugh or cry about his creepily skinny face.

    • I highly agree that adding a sidekick is a great story device. Arrow is doing a wonderful job with introducing Roy Harper and slowly building up to him joining Ollie’s crusade. And I’m pretty sure that’s what they’re going to do with Katana, set her up and tell her story instead of just starting with her as sidekick. But we’ll see…if we can get over the animation thing.
