Cyclops Continues to Be Right

For those of you following my coverage of Avengers vs. X-Men, and readily agree with my assessment that Cyclops was right, then you absolutely need to be reading AvsX: Cosquences. It’s a weekly series that is following Cyclops now that he’s the villain and in prison, and it’s absolutely perfect! The second issue came out today, and it’s all about Cyclops and Wolverine sitting down and talking this through, and it is everything I could have hoped for how Cyclops would be treated after Avengers vs. X-Men. Ignore his villainous cameo in Uncanny Avengers, this is the real Cyclops.

I’m not going to spoil anything or do a review of the issue, just take my advice and pick it up if you’re pro-Cyclops. It’s exciting to know that at least someone at Marvel understood exactly what was happening with Cyclops. And Wolverine gets absolutely put in his place!

Also, let me know in the comments if you would like some spoilers, because I can readily provide should there be demand.

  1. I love Scott verbally pwning Logan. And his talk of how he knows he’s going to be killed, and expects to be a martyr for it, was likewise great. I wonder how long it’ll be before we see a “Cyclops was right” t-shirt.

    • They already exist, according to some spotted at NYC Comic-Con.

      • I mostly meant in-universe, but that’s awesome. I really have to wonder if Marvel completely underestimated the support Scott would get from readers.

      • Quentin Quire was also wearing a Cyclops t-shirt in W&tXM, if memory serves right.

“It’s exciting to know that at least someone at Marvel understood exactly what was happening with Cyclops. And Wolverine gets absolutely put in his place!”

As it turns out, based on this podcast http://marvel.com/news/story/19571/download_this_week_in_marvel_avx_special_10 , Tom Brevoort– the main editor of AvX– doesn’t know a thing about X-Men history and was ignoring Nick Lowe’s (consulting editor of AvX; main editor of the X-books) input throughout the series. If you also look at the writers behind AvX, majority of them are current Avengers/Wolverine writers =/ That’s not to say all of them were biased in their handling (Hickman was able to do the X-Men justice in his one issue), but it does make one wonder how much each knew about the X-Men’s history…

After all, did you read AvsX#6? In it, Havok defeated Cap in a one-page battle with the caveat being the book was written by the X-office.

      • Nah, I mostly ignored AvX. But you may be on to something there about the writers. There were a lot of times during Avengers vs. X-Men where I was just totally frustrated with how they were portraying Cyclops. And not in a “I love Cyclops, how dare you do this to him” kind of way, but more in a way that what they were saying about Cyclops conflicted with how he was actually being portrayed. It was weird.

And now Kieron Gillen is writing Consequences, and he wasn’t one of the Avengers vs. X-Men writers. He’s been the writer of Uncanny X-Men for the past year or so, so he definitely has a strong handle on Scott Summers. That could explain a lot.

Still, at least that means Gillen understands Cyclops’ role in all things!

      • My greatest gripes were from the blatant disregard of continuity.

“The Phoenix cannot be controlled” — Er, Rachel Grey-Summers anyone?
“The Phoenix made Jean insane and become Dark Phoenix” — Er, Hellfire Club anyone?

Then Marvel forces a new element to the Phoenix’s lore: K’un Lun. R u srs?!

Nevermind Cyke being right about the Phoenix’s intentions, the Avengers following Cyke’s original plan of letting Hope confront the Phoenix, and Cyke’s portrayal; I’m greatly saddened by the disregard of X-Men history because new readers– the ones most likely drawn in to the comic book world by the success of the recent Avengers movie– will never know the truth of the matter because they would never touch the old books.

      • Eh, I’ve started making my peace with air-brushed continuity. Same with aesthetic changes from comics to film. You’ve just got to roll with it and not let that kind of thing bother you too much.
