I Guess Thor’s Gonna Fight Dark Elves After All
Against my recommendation, apparently Thor: The Dark World is going to be about the dark elves. Deadline is reporting that Christopher Eccleston, the 9th Doctor, has been cast as Malekith the Accursed, leader of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim.
I think this is a terrible idea.
Was there anyone who thought the best thing about the first Thor were the frost giants?
I get that Marvel wants to push the mystical, mythological angle for Thor in his solo movies. And I know that people are a little more accepting of stuff like elves and dwarves after Lord of the Rings. But the movie going public is not that accepting. Thor was a hard enough sell to begin with, but Marvel made it work by focusing on his earthbound adventures. The frost giants were just a small part of the overall story.
So why befuddle the next movie by focusing on the dark elves? It’s not like the dark elves or Malekith are a big part of Thor’s world. Take it from a comic book geek, I don’t know of any story ever about Malekith. The dude is as obscure as any villain ever.
Thor has a lot more earth-based, easy to understand super-villains. You tread into a world of dark elves and high fantasy and Thor is gonna get lost. I’m just sayin’…

I think a Thor 2 is going to “succeed” no matter what it does at this point. So I applaud Marvel/Disney for going the Mythological route. Think of all the crappy Myth movies that have come out lately: Clash of the Titans, the Immortals, Wrath of the Titans, even Percy Jackson. None of them were particularly good. But I think that means they need to keep trying until they get it right. Because Ancient Mythology is wicked awesome. As a source material, it has all sorts of cool stuff to use and turn into special effects. Give Thor a shot at it. Maybe his star power will help morph mythological fantasy into a palatable movie.
Then think of the after effects of a good myth-filled Thor movie. Maybe that‘s the kind of proof needed to get some Wonder Woman stuff out of Hollywood. Or how about a God of War film? I’d watch the hell out of a God of War film. Point is I personally want a good myth film. And without Thor’s help, I don’t think Hollywood can do it. So Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings can take one for the team and just not show up this time. Or maybe they can get kidnapped by Dr. Who in elf ears. I’m fine with both.
I have no problem with exploring the mythology, especially Norse mythology. But a land of Dark Elves? That’s not Norse mythology, that D&D mythology. I want Thor to visit Hel or just do more Norse stuff. This move is too deep into the weirdness of the Nine Realms.
Svartalfheim is the land of the dark elves, directly from Norse mythology. It literally means home of the black elves. D&D and Marvel lifted these ideas from Norse mythology.
Malekith was the creation of Walt Simonson, whose Thor run was considered the “golden age” of Thor. He was the one that brought alot of the Norse mythology aspects to an otherwise normal superhero.
You may be a “comic book geek,” but you obviously don’t know much about either the Thor comics or Norse mythology.
Just sayin’
Oh, I completely agree. I know very, very little about either Thor comics or Norse mythology. I think my point was that I think ‘dark elves’ don’t seem bombastic enough to base a movie around.
