Assassin’s Creed Comes to America, F*** Yeah!

Bits and pieces of information and rumors have been leaking out about the highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed 3, but the people at Ubisoft have just come right out and told us now that it’s going to take place during the American Revolution, baby!

America the Beautiful!

I did not see this development coming, but I absolutely love it! The American Revolution is such an exciting time in history, and considering the Assassin’s Creed devotion to historic details and people, it’s going to be like a walk through a wonderful text book to play this game. Renaissance Italy was fun, but what do I know or care about Renaissance Italy? I’m an American, and I want a game where I get to cross the Delaware with George freakin’ Washington!

As this post at MightyGodKing points out, though, this is one of the last eras that the game makers can use before automatic guns start taking over. That would put a fast end to their rooftop knife fights and swordplay, the corner stones of the series. But according to Game Informer, the team making Assassin’s Creed 3 has been working on this game from the ground up. So maybe they’ve found a better way to incorporate muskets and pistols and with the hidden knife assassinations. I have complete faith in their brilliance.

I will be getting it for the X-Box 360

No details on the story or main character just yet. But Game Informer promises a full reveal in their next issue…whenever that comes out.

I’m just surprised that Assassin’s Creed 3 isn’t going to be about Desmond in modern day New York City. Now that would be a game.

Maybe I should back up and explain to our non-Assassin’s Creed fans.

Assassin’s Creed is a series of video games about a historic sect of good guy assassins. Throughout history, they have fought to protect us from the Templars, who seek to dominate and control the world. Each of the games takes place in a different historical time period, with great attention paid to historic people, places and events. Ubisoft goes out of their way to turn each game into a little encyclopedia of the time. It’s quite fun.

What’s especially brilliant about Assassin’s Creed is the gameplay. Have you heard of parkour? That fancy urban running/jumping/bouncing style of moving across rooftops and stairwells and through parks and stuff? Well Ubisoft turned that into a video game. The bulk of Assassin’s Creed involves running across rooftops, making wild leaps, climbing the outsides of buildings and basically turning a city into your playground to hunt down the bad guys and assassinate them. Here’s a video:

That is badass gameplay.

The first game, Assassin’s Creed, takes place during the Crusades in Jersusalem. You play Altair, the assassin from that time period.

The white cloak is kind of their thing

Then along comes Assassin’s Creed II, which takes place during the Renaissance in Italy. You play Ezio, who discovers that his family is pat of the ancient order of assassins. Ezio rises from a common street rat to head of the Assassin Brotherhood in Rome, Italy. Still they are waging a war against the Templars.

Assassin’s Creed II was followed by two spin-off titles: Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations. Both were pretty full games, continuing the story of Ezio as he grows into an old man through various cities and periods of history. I haven’t played Revelations yet. It brings Ezio’s story to a close.

Hopefully they washed that white cloak as it was passed down

Now we come to Assassin’s Creed III, set in the American Revolution. We don’t know much about the new protagonist, but it appears that he may be part Native American. He’s likely descended from Altair and Ezio, because I’m pretty sure that’s how it works. All of these main characters are descended from one another. And maybe they really do pass that white cloak down through the ages like some ratty old heirloom.

He better be an American patriot and not no filthy Redcoat!

Oh, one last thing. You might be asking who this ‘Desmond’ person was that I mentioned and why I expected the game to be set in modern day New York City. Well each game has a framing device set in the present day starring a guy named Desmond Miles, who is the modern day descendant of Altair, Ezio and most likely this new guy. Desmond in 2012 also starts learning about his heritage as an assassin, because the battle between the Assassins and the Templars still rages in 2012. Each of the games, from the Crusades to the Renaissance to the American Revolution, has been a look into the lives of Desmond’s ancestors.

So I thought for sure it was all leading to a game where Desmond gets to run and jump over the rooftops of New York City.

But now I take that back. The American Revolution will be so much cooler!

  1. Uhhhhhh There weren’t really a lot of “buildings” to speak of in Revolutionary Era America. So i don’t know what this guy plans to be running and jumping off of. Maybe that’s what they meant by rebuilding from the ground up. They’re probably going to have to remove the parkour aspect if they want to stay faithful to historical accuracy.

Like, they had buildings and everything. But not like Renaissance Era Italy. Even the biggest cities were pretty sparse. Remember that scene in National Treasure when Nick Cage is running accross the rooftops with the Declaration of Independence. Yeah, you couldn’t do that for very long. So, good luck on your video game. You X-Box kids are spoiled.
