Wonder Woman to Appear on Maury Povich
Wonder Woman and her new writers have a secret to reveal in November’s issue #3. It’s a fundamental change to Wonder Woman’s origin, and perhaps even motivation of the character. The new origin is part of the New 52 Rejiggering, and was revealed in an article in the New York Post. I don’t know about you, but when an actual newspaper reports on changes to a comic book character, I always get a little skeeved out. I’m excited for the attention…but I have no faith in mainstream journalists to ‘get it’, you know?
How many of them had any idea what Ultimate Spider-Man was when they ranted about Miles Morales?
Anyway, this change isn’t even that big of a deal. It’s not like Wonder Woman’s origin was as iconic as Superman or Batman’s. But I’ll reveal it after the jump!
Wonder Woman will now be the daughter of Zeus, the king of the Greek pantheon of Gods and ruler of Mount Olympus. This makes Wonder Woman a demigod, exactly like Hercules. We do not yet know Wonder Woman’s mother, or her connection to the Amazons. Just the Zeus part was leaked in an article today in the Post.
Here’s a quote from DC co-publisher Jim Lee.
“In this case, making her a god actually makes her more human, more relatable.”
Wonder Woman’s original origin, which has stood as canon since her creation in the 1950s, was that Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, fashioned Wondy out of clay. She was then given life by the Greek goddesses, with Wonder Woman stories closely tied to Greek mythology. She got her magic lasso from the goddess Athena. Often fought with Hercules, Medusa and others. Even in her new reboot, writer Brian Azzarello introduced Hermes, Hera and others.
Here she is head-butting a centaur.
I am cool with this change. I wasn’t married to the ‘formed out of clay’ thing. It’s hardly as important as her parents getting murdered in an alley, or being the last son of the dying planet Krypton. So I don’t mind at all that they’re changing Wonder Woman’s origin. I love her being tied to Greek mythology, and this just makes that connection thicker and more meaningful.
So I’m all for it.
I just have a couple of hang-ups.
First of all, Zeus? Really? They couldn’t have been a little more original? All demigods seem to be the son of Zeus. Couldn’t they have made her the daughter of Athena? Or of Hera? Maybe the daughter of Hades. They couldn’t do Poseiden, because of both Aquaman and Percy Jackson. But they could have picked a more original god than Zeus.
Second of all, DC did the same thing with Wonder Girl only a few years ago. Wonder Girl had always just been a human girl who helped Wonder Woman, until Zeus admired her bravery and granted her super-powers. Then eventually they revealed that she was Zeus’ daughter all along.
Now Wonder Woman is getting the same surprise.
Well there’s just one thing to say to Zeus.

It makes sense for her to be born of Zeus and one of his zillions of mistresses. It makes it easier to fit into Greek mythology if they’re trying to legitimize the relationship. The other Olympians did have illicit affairs but none as famous or as varied as Zeus did.
I’m digging her being daughter of the king of the Olympian gods.
